In this piece for @prospectmagazine.co.uk I argue that it is time we stopped letting the AI/tech industry dictate the narrative, and I attempt to dismantle the self-serving terminology and myths it has created. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/techno...

That artificial intelligence could destroy humanity is a story imposed by the AI industry itself. It’s time to challenge it

How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...
A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

Dragging a morph in Livelymerge used to cost four Automerge ops per pointer move. At 30 fps, that's 120 ops/sec, bloating the document forever. Even worse, the morph's movement looked jerky to everyone else. Now it costs zero ops, and it's smoooooooth.

I Don't Sleep Well. The title is rendered in biological looking script. The action takes place in the cross section of an apartment, where the characters are in front of a large window with the angle such that we are looking down on to the street. Insect arms reach out to a woman, whose silhouette is replicated behind her. The moon shines down.

Exorcising us of the Primer
July 2024. Part of “Letters from the Lab”, a series of essays on my research written for patrons. You can also listen to this essay (29 minutes).

If you want to make an educational technologist’s eyes sparkle, just mention “The Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer”. It’s a futuristic interactive schoolbook, described in Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age, where it lifts a young girl out of poverty and into sovereign power. It’s my field’s most canonical vision of a wildly powerful learning environment. If you ask a technologist interested in learning what they dream of achieving, most will answer: “building the Primer.”
