Pondering about terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/24/w... and the need for humans to "understand" ... ... In computer vision and translation, "understanding" symbolically came at such a huge cost ... feels like we gave up "understanding" for "utility".

I wonder if AI makes the cost of writing software 0 if that will lead to more native applications (vs web apps) or fewer. On one hand, if you make native apps as cheap to develop as web apps they might grow, but on the other hand, users might need more and more the web's security model. Any bets?

Wow, no way! I just installed the @atpassport.net Firefox extension and managed to log into a website using FedCM in Firefox using my own PDS. This is insane, I had no idea this was possible at all, and gives a whole opportunity for us to implement FedCM in Firefox (and maybe even Safari?).

I'm getting a "your account is too new" (has to be at least 7 days old) to create a group chat ... probably because my PDS is hand-written and i messing things up ... Any chance someone at bluesky can figure out why that's happening?

I'm neither a linguist nor a mathematician, but I'm getting a deja vu in the math community struggling with the opposing cultures of problem solving and conceptual understanding, similar to chomsky's attitude against LLMs and language understanding. gowers.wordpress.com/2026/09/17/w...

Exciting! Europe makes it a bit harder for me, but might be manageable with enough time in advance! The first week of May is my (and my oldest kid) birthday (the 2nd), so make it count (or, crossing fingers, host it on the last week of April)! Either way, looking forward to another exciting year!

I don't have a single tattoo, and likely never will, but getting a navier-stokes counter example would be pretty high on my list if it holds peer reviewing. I can't believe we got computers to come up with this, hard to believe I'm seeing this.

Navier Stokes is nothing compared to the challenge of inventing a robot that can fold clothes. I'm telling you, whoever does that will have solved 99% of social problems.

"You can't fill a cup that is already full" has saved me so much time in my life :) I've become extremely good at sensing when someone (including myself, on occasions) has already formed an opinion and isn't willing to change them independently of the amount of evidence you can provide.

This is a really big deal! It promises to solve the dilemma between: - "enter your handle" ( annoying ) Vs. - "login with Bluesky" ( excludes non-Bluesky providers ) Vs. - "login with [whole list of buttons for different Atmosphere apps]" ( you still need to enter your handle for custom PDS )

We've been working hard on FedCM to make it work better for the decentralised web! These new designs should enable us to support the Atmosphere (AT Protocol) and Fediverse (ActivityPub) better, including parity with centralised identity providers.

FWIW, I'm baking into EVP too this notion of BYOIDP (bring your own identity), or better yet, constructing EVP around an existing UX affordance and identity system that already has that property. The future is decentralized.

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

@bnewbold.net have you considered using notation (rather than dids) to create the level of indirection? e.g. domain.com is distinguishable from 192.291.993.99 by notation / parsing, rather than declaration. Wouldn't it be cleaner if we had at://sgo.to and at://thaoj4hhvraos7y6v3yog7re?

Ever been annoyed by a "confirm your email" message with a flaky magic link or OTP with clunky copy+paste, if the email even arrives‽ Optimistically, 20-30% of those emails* are never seen. We can fix that! If you have *any* email collection on your site, I'd love to see you try it & give feedback.

Watched 4 back to back movies on a long flight back home. "Good luck, have fun, don't die" is insane great. "They will kill you" was great too. "Begonia" was good but I stopped in the middle and restarted. "Roofman" I watched to take a break from thrillers and enjoyed too :)
