A thread on writing book reviews in Academia (inspired by @gillianmathys.bsky.social). Book reviews are a very delicate thing. The reality is you get least credit for it even though they matter. Most of us post-PhD, rarely get to read a monograph again from A to Z, unless... we're reviewing it.

The oddest thing about the response to this essay is people who say it’s “personal”. You can disagree about some or all of it! I may well be wrong! But it’s not “personal” to analyze a film or other work of art, even negatively. Criticism is more than “Hurray!” or “Hiss!”

well, well, well, the dick measuring context in the Romanian parliament tonight surely was something to behold! ended badly for the ones who started it, who were stupid enough to think the far right can be an accommodating bedfellow. and got royally screwed.

I don't know whether it is the #1 Catherine O'Hara accomplishment but the fact that she invented a manner of speaking that no other person in human history has ever attempted for Schitts Creek and made it seem realistic that her character would talk that way felt like a comedy miracle to me

#Romanian traditional calendar calls the month beginning tomorrow 'Brumărél' [bru.mə'rel], a noun formed from 'Brumar' "November" with the diminutive suffix -el. both go back to 'brumă' "(hoar) frost," descendant of Lat. 'bruma' "winter (cold)." let's prepare for Frosty's little bro! ❄️ 🥶
