This is an excellent article by Leif Wetherby - why AI is a cultural technology not a collection of human-like agents (citing our work on this). And why the anthropomorphism is a distraction from the very real risks and dangers and the way to deal with them. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/o...

If we want to figure out the proper way to control A.I. models, we need to recognize what they really are.

I have reviewed thousands of grad school applications over my career & always advocated against looking at overall undergrad GPA & instead at the trajectory in the last two years. That’s because I saw a pattern on so many women’s transcripts as they experienced something in their first year 1/

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I see this a lot with my well-meaning students: the sense that their STEM courses are immovable objects, and my requirements in History are somehow less reasonable/should bend in response to their other course commitments. They are not coming up with this assumption, they have been taught it

The technicality and knowledge base of many humanities disciplines are, in effect, hidden from students who only have to engage with materials in English translation & never have to gain the expertise needed to perform basic research in these fields

I think about this a lot in terms of languages. Some depts expect/are expected to train students in the requisite math, coding, and technical knowledge to understand the material in more depth Most humanities courses don’t expect/aren’t allowed to require students to know requisite languages

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.

This is one of the challenges in drawing students to humanities majors. Either the subjects are frivolous so why take them, or students are shocked that the teachers expect them to do work so they seek easier pathways that promise greater material rewards.

Language courses aside, the idea that sequences build on each other and that you need to have a body of foundational knowledge to succeed in what the course catalog calls upper division classes is something we've lost.

Yes, and also a great reluctance to have prerequisites for anything. The main reason why math/science classes in college are hard is that there's stuff you're just expected to know that will not be taught again in later classes.

OK I actually love this suggestion, not only for the reasons discussed here, but because how awesome would it be to actually have the time to work through, say, all the stages of writing a research paper *with* the students? You can bet they'd learn the process better.

It continues to amaze me that the industry/culture that so demonizes cultural theory and humanities are its greatest purveyors. Naming machine learning “artificial intelligence” is gramsci level politics. yet when we call that naming what it is, suddenly it doesn’t matter what you call it.

The Pittsburgh zoo and ppg aquarium logo, with the heads of a gorilla and a lioness made by the negative space beneath a spreading acacia tree. The Electro Domstici logo, with a two-pronged electrical plug forming the D and the gaps between the bars of the capital E.The guild of food writers logo, a downward facing fountain pin nib with the gap between the tines shaped like a dinner spoon. The Hartford Whalers logo, a green w with a blue whale tale above it, forming an H in the negative space between them
