There is 73% support in Britain for the principle of refugee protection - including in the UK - while 20% are opposed to this. The peak of support was 2022 at 80% (largely because the images from Ukraine had more impact than images from the Channel that year, though boats + migration were high)

Former Labour Deputy Leader Lord Thomas Watson, now Senior VP at Palantir UK, wrote to me defending their public contracts. Instead of trading letters, I’ve challenged him to an open, public debate. He can defend Palantir’s ethos; I’ll argue for public accountability. Will you accept, Tom?
Formal letter from Clive Lewis MP, Member of Parliament for Norwich South, to Lord Thomas Watson of Wyre Forest, Senior Vice President of Palantir Technologies UK Limited, dated 7 October 2026. In the letter, Lewis challenges Watson to a public debate regarding Palantir's role in government contracts and public institutions. Lewis rejects Watson's claim that criticisms malign software engineers, stressing that elected officials must scrutinize corporate power, democratic control, and public accountability. He proposes a debate with an impartial chair, equal time, and audience questions.

But we are bad at reckoning with such a future.
We find the image of such discontinuity both overwhelmingly bleak and terrifying, and also histrionic and implausible. It is our job, then, to teach ourselves to believe truly in its possibility, and to marshal everything we have in our power to prevent it. Because the longed-for miracle has already occurred. We have every technology necessary to turn around the climate crisis. It is not only within our human reach but comparatively straightforward. We have the skills and the expertise and the materials. What we do not have is the political will. But it can be created - for it is the people who create it.

I should add, I realize, that AI has been absolutely nowhere near this: the whole endeavour has been painstakingly drawn by hand, frame-by-frame, at 12 frames per second, which is unbelievably time consuming. It’s not a viable way to make a living any more, but I love it, and the hand-made look is 👌

The main point of paying to have your kids schooled separately from wider society is to embed them in the socio-cultural mileu and, crucially, *networks* of economic elites so that they have access to the privileges this confers after they leave school. paying for them to know each other is worth it

I think this misses the point of private education tbh. The standard of teaching is not better / often worse as there’s less accountability. Class sizes are much smaller & intake is selective which together are main explanation for higher educational attainment outcomes. But this is also not it
