It’s only “value capture” if it comes from the Georgist region of land value taxation. Development fees and exactions are just sparkling housing taxes.

The new KC assessor should lead the conversation on innovative policy to address these issues, like land value taxes (the assessors worked to kill this last year before it hit the legislature) and removing the exemption from private golf courses.

Awesome question - I like Jason's point a lot - insofar as residential rates are certainly going to go up, we need to address the inequities within the residential system (e.g., undervaluing the land associated with high end SFHs, for instance) because the stakes are raised. Also...

On April 15, Portland City Council will consider a resolution focused on keeping the Inner Eastside Area Planning project moving forward. This is the resolution passed out of committee on March 12th (unanimously!) with huge support from our membership and coalition in the form of written testimony.

Riding the Westside MAX for the first time in a few years for a work event. I can't believe there's still no development at Sunset TC. Gov't should buy the land or tax it heavily to get a new neighborhood at that location. It's incredibly transit accessible, not just MAX, lots of buses @trimet.org

Trump's latest round of tariffs will raise the average American's taxes by $4,700 - while he cuts taxes for billionaires. Poor people and immigrants who rely on imported groceries will be hit hardest. Import taxes are not progressive and should be condemned by all supporters of economic justice.
