From the show Futurama. Fry yells "Dork alert!" to Leela while pointing at a projected image of himself in an echoic pose. In the slide, he is a young bespectacled dork with acne, a scepter, and a t-shirt that says "Dungeon Master." In the present/foreground, he's in a tuxedo appearing onstage. He and Leela sit at a table with bunting next to a lectern.

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

Strong Solar Flare Erupts from Sun - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/2oN32Uf
The Sun emitted a strong solar flare, peaking at 7:14 p.m. ET on July 2, 2023. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun constantly, captured an image of the event.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

This flare is classified as an X1.0 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.

To see how such space weather may affect Earth, please visit NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center spaceweather.gov/, the U.S. government’s official source for space weather forecasts, watches, warnings, and alerts. NASA works as a research arm of the nation's space weather effort. NASA observes the Sun and our space environment constantly with a fleet of spacecraft that study everything from the Sun's activity to the solar atmosphere, and to the particles and magnetic fields in the space surrounding Earth.

T-Rex: Sherlock Holmes, who was the world's greatest detective but complete rubbish at baking, sighed.

T-Rex: His latest cake was, once again, complete rubbish!T-Rex: He was BEYOND frustrated. He'd TRIED using his detective skills to deduce why his cakes sucked so bad, but even so, they only ever told him why THIS cake sucked (he accidentally used a cup of baking soda instead of a teaspoon) and not why the NEXT cake would suck.
Dromiceiomimus: They always sucked for a completely new reason?
T-Rex: They ALWAYS sucked for a completely NEW reason!!
Utahraptor: Surely at some point he'd run out of new ways to ruin cakes?
T-Rex: You'd think!

T-Rex: "But sadly there are SO MANY WAYS to ruin a cake," Sherlock sighed, as he put his batter into the oven on the top rack instead of the centre one, which would, 40 minutes later, burn the cake's top while leaving the bottom underdone.
Utahraptor: Sherlock, no!!
T-Rex: He can't hear you! He's fictional!!
T-Rex: And he's having the WORST DAY of his FICTIONAL LIFE - and to make matters EVEN WORSE, the WHOLE WORLD is going to hear about it, because I'm writing it down and publishing it all!!

Centaurus A Extreme Deep Field - 120 Hours - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/euWKoc
The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128)
This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure.
I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 120 hours of data on 43 different nights in Feb-May 2013 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45.
I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data, with the goal of presenting this majestic Southern galaxy as it has never been seen before - with all the main features showing in one single image, in order to truly get a grasp of what this intriguing object is all about.

Visible are some unique features, some of which have never been imaged before by amateurs:

* A set of enormous reddish filaments associated with the relativistic jets.
* The complete shell structure of the extended halo, showing both the faint outer shells and brighter inner ones.
* 709 of the catalogued globular clusters orbiting the galaxy.
* Integrated Flux Nebulae permeating the entire field of view around the galaxy.

Image details:
Date: Taken over 43 nights in Feb-May 2013
Exposure: LRGB: 90h:10h:10h:10h, total 120 hours @ -28C

Tumultuous Clouds of Jupiter - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/2gj3QP4
This stunning compilation image of Jupiter’s stormy northern hemisphere was captured by NASA’s Juno spacecraft as it performed a close pass of the gas giant planet. Some bright-white clouds can be seen popping up to high altitudes on the right side of Jupiter’s disk. (The Juno team frequently refers to clouds like these as “pop-up” clouds in image captions.)

Juno took the four images used to produce this color-enhanced view on May 29, 2019, between 12:52 a.m. PDT (3:52 a.m. EDT) and 1:03 a.m. PDT (4:03 a.m. EDT), as the spacecraft performed its 20th science pass of Jupiter. At the time the images were taken, the spacecraft was between 11,600 miles (18,600 kilometers) and 5,400 miles (8,600 kilometers) above Jupiter's cloud tops, above a northern latitude spanning from about 59 to 34 degrees.

Worlds Apart - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/bjqDsc
In March 2011, MESSENGER became the first spacecraft to orbit the planet Mercury. In July of the same year, the Dawn spacecraft became the first to orbit a main-belt asteroid, Vesta. Both MESSENGER and Dawn are missions in the Discovery program, NASA's lowest-cost category of planetary mission.

The image above shows Mercury on the left, and Vesta on the right. Both surfaces are marked by impact craters, but the most immediately noticeable difference is that Vesta has a much more irregular shape. This is a consequence of Mercury's far larger gravity, which has squeezed the planet into a sphere. Vesta's weak gravity is less able to overcome the strength of the rocks. Mercury's mass is about 1300 times greater than that of Vesta.

The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first ever to orbit the planet Mercury, and the spacecraft's seven scientific instruments and radio science investigation are unraveling the history and evolution of the Solar System's innermost planet. Visit the Why Mercury? section of this website to learn more about the key science questions that the MESSENGER mission is addressing. During the one-year primary mission, MDIS is scheduled to acquire more than 75,000 images in support of MESSENGER's science goals.
