I had a real bucket list day for #fishes today. I’ve seen this species once, at the edge of visibility, at about 325ft deep but here at Hōlanikū/Kure Atoll they’re much shallower. Genicanthus personatus, or the masked angelfish. 🦑Just look at this thing!🐠 (no strobes, so sorry about the colors)

A male masked angelfish. It’s a mostly white fish with an orange face mask, orange pectoral fins, and an orange dorsal margin. It has a thick black band on the caudal peduncle. The colors are a bit off since the photo was taken in ~70 feet of water without external lighting. This species has sold for tens of thousands of dollars in the aquarium trade.

Day 2 of Papahānaumokuākea expedition. Dawn at Nihoa Island. This tiny island has more than 30 heiau (ancient Hawaiian sacred structures) built across hundreds of years and seeing it at sunrise, you can really understand why.
