this isn't some abstract argument either: all of our decades of experience with large, complex safety-critical systems shows that building a safety culture is the only way to manage and mitigate risk responsibly... and that's impossible to reconcile with a longtermist utilitarian perspective

We're not suffering a breakdown of the social fabric because we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements with each other; we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements because some people are trying to deliberately rend the social fabric.

I’ve seen a lot of people asking women why we think rehabilitation isn’t possible, why we insist on “canceling” rapists. It is possible, it takes a lot of time and effort and work. In the meantime, we need to stop throwing the lives of girls and women into the trash.

we are going to have to find an alternative to meta products for local communities and advertising, right now, it’s almost impossible to do any kind of local business or art project without it, but both their rules and support are so arbitrary and capricious that you can’t rely on them

It's easy to say we should be having these conversations if you don't have to engage with the reality of what these people believe, or the implications in your day-to-day life. I don't need to debate World War II with the guy who thinks the world would be better if the Nazis won; real guy I know!

Because I didn’t drive much before I finished college, I mostly know how to get around my home town by sight. Means I often still need GPS when I’m going somewhere new because I don’t have the best sense of how the places I do know connect with each other.

there's more than a hint of 'noble savage' in the way people outside the trades talk about those jobs and especially those workers. there's a reason people leave those jobs for less physically demanding ones if the option becomes available! enough salt-of-the-earth rhapsodizing!

There are NOT machine-made clothes. If there were, your clothes would be made in the country you live in (where the customers are), or in China (where machines are cheap). They’re made in Bangladesh or India or Indonesia because that’s where the LABOUR is cheap. Your clothes are made by people.
Joyce Carol Oates says: “This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to
different consumers.“

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

I don't like when people dismiss white-collar crime as victimless, b/c while it's true that those who defraud rich people are the most likely to face consequences, & that sucks, lots of NOT rich people lose everything they have & suffer real harm. But Holmes' fraud fucked with *cancer diagnoses*.
