Unbelievable footage from NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Polo. Simply incredible.

I have a new piece out in Nature today on the record-breaking 2026/2027 El Niño, what impacts we should expect, and how governments can prepare. The Niño3.4 region is currently running more than 1C hotter than any prior event on record, and we remain months away from the peak www.nature.com/artic...

Honestly, it's already getting hard to keep up with all of the new climate data records. And I only expect this to amplify later this year. Climate change is still the key story. You just experienced the warmest summer on record across the contiguous United States. Data at doi.org/10.7289/V5SX...
Line graph showing average temperatures for each June-August in the contiguous U.S. (CONUS) from 1895 to 2026. There is a long-term increasing trend. Data is from NClimGrid. The average for 2026 was 74.4°F.

2026 is on track to be the warmest (~35% chance) or second warmest (~63%) year on record, while 2027 is very likely (92% chance) to be the warmest on record on the back of a growing super El Niño event. For more, check out my new Carbon Brief State of the Climate Q2 update: www.carbonbrief.org/...

With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....

The last 6 months, Nov-Apr, represent the driest Nov-Apr period since 1980-81 for the Contiguous U.S. and the 7th driest since 1895-96. There are large areas that experienced the driest Nov-Apr on record (red colors). Much of the Great Lakes region had their wettest Nov-Apr on record. 🌵

Business uptake of biodiversity disclosure is limited. While biodiversity and nature underpin the 🌍 global economy, the latest IPBES #BizBiodiversity Assessment reveals that less than 1 per cent of publicly reporting companies mention their impacts on biodiversity. 🧪🏡 bit.ly/IPBES12Media

Okay sharing one more loop, this one from @cyclonicwx.bsky.social zoomed in visible 1-min meso over Category 5 #Hurricane #Erin. Thanks to the 500 meter resolution of GOES-19 channel 2, you can still see features like the stadium effect & mesovortices rotating around the tiny eye. 🌀 🤯

To be clear: this would mean the *increment* of the increase in 2024 is itself the largest on record (in addition the value being the highest on record, which unfortunately happens essentially every year in our rapid warming era). That's...not great (as Glen discusses downthread).

Thinking of the many hard-working and skilled federal employees fired today from the NWS. Your contributions over the years have helped the NWS and its ability to fulfill its mission of protecting life & property. This is a loss for the NWS and for the nation.

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

physics of climate impacts 101: - Stuff gets hot (worse heatwaves) - Hot air holds more water vapor (heavier rainfall) - Hot air is thirstier air (higher drought risk) - Warm water is hurricane food (stronger storms) - Hot water expands and hot ice melts (sea level rise)

All surface temperature products for 2024 are now live. All show 2024 is the warmest year (very clearly). The estimates of the change since the pre-industrial (1850-1900) are more uncertain but range from 1.46 to 1.62ºC. It is therefore *likely* this was the first year that exceeded 1.5ºC.
five time series of global mean surface temperature changes starting low and noisy in the 1850s - rising clearly since the 1960s - and showing 2024 was clearly the warmest.

Here's a schematic I published in this 2021 piece to illustrate how even a modest delay in onset of rainy season in Southern California can dramatically amplify wildfire risk by lengthening seasonal overlap between dry vegetation and strong offshore winds during Oct-Jan. #CAfire
Schematic from Swain 2021 depicting how even a modest (1-month) delay in the Southern California rainy season can greatly amplify wildfire risk by increasing the temporal/seasonal overlap between critically dry vegetation and the occurrence of strong, dry offshore (downsloping) winds.

As a reminder, land areas (where we live) are warming around twice as fast as the oceans. Subsequently, most of us are 'experiencing' temperatures rising faster than the global mean record. Data from NASA GISTEMPv4: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ ⚒️🧪
Line graph time series showing global land surface temperatures (90°S to 90°N) in a red line and global mean surface temperatures (90°S to 90°N) in a blue line. Temperatures are averaged annually from 1900 through 2023. Line trends are also shown from 1990 to 2023. The land is warming faster than the global mean.
