I stepped away from my computer for a moment. When I returned, it was building something. I did not ask it to do this. We're not ready for what's coming

“Abolish ICE” was immediately met with eye rolling condescension and after events proved that policy correct, and support *among Democrats* for it exploded to like 80%, it didn’t move party leaders at all. How is this tenable

it's interesting how when a dem loses because they weren't right-wing enough, it's their own fault, but when a certain kind of person even *anticipates* a dem losing because they couldn't win over trans people, it's somehow the fault of trans people and not the dem

right, unbiased "journalism" would just be a plain presentation of raw data. the use of journalism is that it's a person's interpretation of the facts, which is necessarily biased.

americans' hatred of muslims is famously one of the things osama bin laden was mad about. i don't think anything about the way we responded to 9/11 was remotely a win for him.

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

don't you think it's awfully convenient to convince yourself that those disagreeing with you believe something less appealing to you than the thing they're actually saying? it would be marginally more reasonable to just reject their arguments for no reason at all

even if you like the kinds of fun in GTA, i feel like it just doesn't do those kinds of fun very well. it bills itself as this open world game where you can do anything but then everything is super railroaded, you can't even take shortcuts when chasing someone without 'abandoning' the mission

sure. it's actually super normal to start arguing with someone when you don't care what they think. but i can believe that you don't care what i think, otherwise you would know what argument you've been arguing with
000
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
now, i might argue that *this specific* rule has no use, that probably a minority of speakers follow it, and that we *shouldn't* be teaching a rule to students that most of them don't end up following, and that those who do end up being needlessly pedantic for no benefit to anyone.
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
we're not talking about students in primary and secondary school and i'm not arguing what anyone is or isn't expected to learn.
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
in the case that most speakers *don't* follow the rule, their nonetheless being *aware* of it would suggest more strongly to me that it's not a useful rule
000
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
what i know for certain is that not following the rule is not some huge egregious mistake. though i realize now that your focus on it over the whole AI thing was tongue in cheek
000
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
maybe it's specifically typical of attorneys to use "fewer" with countable nouns. i wouldn't know. but i don't think most english speakers follow that rule
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
i'm not an attorney but i bet many of the rules you consider arbitrary actually serve some direct purpose. those that don't are still useful to follow specifically because it's typical and conventional for attorneys to follow them, thus, deviating from them produces friction or confusion
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
i'm no linguist but i think my own stance is to prescribe a rule exclusively (but not always) when following the rule is more useful to the speaker/writer than not following it. but i suspect linguists themselves should only ever be descriptive
200
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
do you think "correctness" of language exists essentially and objectively in the universe regardless of actual usage, practicality, ambiguity, friction, etc? where do you think correctness actually comes from and how many grammarians need to insist on something for it to be 'correct'?
210
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
well yeah. there's more friction when you're corrected on a correction than when you're just correcting or being corrected, regardless of correctness
000
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
now, i don't know what group is in the majority in this case, but i do think the people making the correction are adding more friction to communication than the people not following the rule
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
you'd be surprised by how many directly prevent ambiguity. we follow the rest for practical reasons too, though. if a significant majority of people in your language community follow a particular rule, it creates unnecessary friction to deviate from that rule
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
they already had distinct meanings (nobody was saying "fewer dirt") but if this specific rule was actually useful in english, we would be correcting millions of people because not following the rule creates ambiguity, not simply because they didn't follow the rule
110
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
the reason using "less" with countable nouns is unacceptable to some people today is that robert baker wrote in 1770 that "fewer" sounds more "elegant" and is more "strictly proper"
100
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
(i should be more specific and say that there was *a* distinction in which 'fewer' can't be used with uncountable nouns, but the rule that you can't use 'less' with countable nouns is relatively recent and robert baker's argument for prescribing it was ridiculous)
000
the raccoons ate all of my koi @classicmax.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
this distinction between less and fewer was invented by just one guy in the late 18th century. the fact that millions of people "can't tell the difference" despite grammarians pushing it on everyone should tell you we don't actually need it.

so, between people who think the democratic party needs to adopt better electoral strategies, and people who think the democratic party is doing nothing wrong, you think the latter are the ones taking trump seriously as a threat?
