I made some of the ugliest + most terrible fanworks alive to get to where I am now. When I started, I was doing sins with digital art that would get me publicly mocked now. Today, I can draw the human figure from 360 degrees from memory. Maybe give people space to learn and be bad, and we get good.

I don't think Americans are told how bad it is in Europe right now - Europe is the continent heating up the fastest because of human induced climate change. For example England, yes, the country of eternal rain, is experiencing a drought. Countless places in Europe are literally on fire.

Joke’s on them, though. Reading belongs to the people. Half of Tiktok videos set up a dialogue between the video and the overlayed subtitles. People demand subtitles on their Youtube videos and alt text on their images. Text messages aren’t going anywhere. We save reading every day.

Word of mouth on social media is a huge driver of products and services, but you can’t MAKE that happen by throwing money at it as effectively as you can steer the conversation by paying for video production (or AI, ugh). Advertisers now, as they did in 1953, prefer not to be spoken over.

They can’t take reading from us. And I do think, actually, that efforts have been made to do so. Why did tech companies want so desperately for a pivot to video? I‘m convinced advertisers (the real customers of social media apps) are really invested in us talking less and them talking more.

Maybe even fewer novels or textbooks. But the internet and cell phones have SAVED reading. You are reading, right now. Text messages have overwhelmed actual phone calls. The audio quality on streaming video is so bad, everyone leaves the subtitles on. You, I, and everyone reads constantly.

Reading belongs to the people. In 1953 Fahrenheit 451 proposed a preposterous future in which reading was outlawed and television replaced it. This hasn’t happened. All evidence suggests people read as much now as they did 70 years ago. Sure we read fewer newspapers, magazines and letters.
