Rapid strengthening and reversal of hippocampal-neocortical interplay mediates human memory formation
Wang et al. demonstrate that hippocampal-neocortical interactions reorganize much faster than traditionally thought. Using multiday intracranial recordings in humans, they show that after just 1 day of learning, the temporal sequence of coupled ripples reverses, with the neocortex leading the hippocampus. This suggests an early neocortical dominance in memory formation.
