Despite recent shocks, the world economy remains a powerful growth machine. But can it last? We must prepare for the worst, argues Martin Wolf: strengthen the fundamentals and stop throwing money around. (It would help if the shocks stopped, too.) Read the column on #FTEdit 👉 ft.trib.al/oNEyaaS
Bar chart comparing IMF forecasts for global GDP growth with actual growth from 2009 to 2025, in percentage points. Negative values indicate the IMF overestimated growth; positive values indicate it underestimated growth. The largest forecasting errors occurred in 2020, when growth fell 6.5 percentage points below forecasts, and 2009, when it fell 3.6 points below. Since 2023, the IMF has consistently underestimated global growth, though by less than one percentage point each year.

Overall, then, the deep unpopularity of Al isn't hard to explain. Here we have a technology that is enriching a small number of people, but whose creators warn may destroy millions of jobs if not the world. And even the usual argument for pro-oligarch policies - job creation! - falls flat because hardly any jobs are being created even in the short run.

Hopeless Healey: my SKETCH of a Chancellor who's rather better at despair. thecritic.co.uk/the-...
“I’m a proud optimist,” John Healey told the Labour Party conference, unconvincingly. Perhaps he is. Let’s imagine that, away from the cameras, the Chancellor of the Exchequer is known as the cheeriest chap in the office, spotting the silver lining on every cloud and for ever detecting blessings beneath their disguises. Unfortunately, the Almighty, displaying once again the sense of humour that holds the universe together, has bestowed upon Healey the demeanour of an undertaker who’s just learned his business has burned down.

BREAKING: An Iowa state court dismisses President Donald Trump’s frivolous lawsuit against veteran pollster J. Ann Selzer (represented by @thefireorg.bsky.social) and the Des Moines Register newspaper, a victory for First Amendment rights. Opinion here: www.fire.org/research-lea...
This case sets a President, a member of Congress, and a former state senator against a pollster and a newspaper, and it arises out of an election. A case of that kind invites the reader to look for a political result. The Court’s role is narrower. It is to sit as an impartial arbiter, to apply the law without passion or prejudice, and to rule without regard to the politics of the day. As such, the only question before the Court is whether the Petition states a claim the law recognizes. At its core, the Plaintiffs’ Petition seeks to stretch both Iowa statutory and common law beyond their current bounds, turning speech that enjoys the highest category of First Amendment protection into a liability. After considering the parties’ arguments, the Court must conclude that the protection is too great and the reach is too far. The case must therefore be dismissed.

Canada can’t survive without the U.S.
This is Trump’s biggest, and most dangerous, lie, and getting us to believe it is central to his intimidation strategy.

Despite reduced U.S.-bound exports, Canada’s economy has continued growing. Two-thirds of those lost merchandise exports have been offset by new exports to other countries. And almost 80 per cent of our GDP is produced and consumed right here, by Canadians, for Canadians. Trump can’t touch that.

Yes, it will be a bumpy ride to disentangle our economy from overreliance on what is now a failed democracy next door. But as the 10th largest economy in the world, with a wealth of natural and human resources, and a stronger capacity to solve problems together, we will most definitely survive without Trump’s America.

Most 'western' governments right now won't take on Big Tech because of worries about growth, and China can because it has fewer concerns on that front. But the largest companies are also arguably constraining the economy as a whole. A huge political economy question.
