I've become convinced that NYC is an appalling failure of governance. It's a city drowning in entirely solvable problems, flapping its hands uselessly as it sinks underneath.

We need safer bike lanes, but why was this commute 20 mins by bike vs. 60 by transit to begin with? Reporting hints that she lived either near Jamaica or Middle Village, worked in East NY. Both would be MUCH faster if we built the transit we're paying for: pedestrianobservations.com/2023/06/18/a...

Over the last 2 weeks, the flight I'm due to take back to the US tomorrow has been canceled 3 times, diverted to Syracuse, and tonight pushed back 8 hours 31 minutes late (after taking another 2.5 hour delay on the ground after the inbound plane arrived late)

Very tragic and sad news... www.amny.com/news/brookly... Buy I disagree with the article characterizing this as a "freak accident". We spend billions every year to keep conductors on Subway trains to be an extra set of eyes to prevent tragedies exactly like this. What happened??

They don't. MTA's Kaufman said this during the meeting. Basically b/c ridership and revenue are growing, the new policies must be working. Oblivious to these other obvious market factors What MTA fails to realize is that they could trade weak 5% ridership growth for 15+% if they stopped being dumb!

Janno Lieber likes to blame Mamdani’s free bus campaign and Covid for muddying the waters and worsening bus fare evasion. Meanwhile, Lieber’s own buses are confusing riders in multiple ways (this bus is not going to Court Sq!) by flashing a “FARE REQUIRED” message on a free subway replacement bus

The fact that the MTA uses 50% of their available space to display useless PSAs (when was the last time you saw someone bring a dog on the bus? Or put their dog in a carrier in the subway, for that matter…) is a perfect demonstration of their failure to understand their job.

So much room for improvement in transit software/display design in the US, made worse by the fact that they could just copy what’s already out there in other countries.

One of the things that again struck me at Innotrans was how very few exhibitors showcased solutions and examples from the Americas. And the few that were on display just look like s—t compared to their international peers. Look at these bus displays, same hardware, very different info quality!

One nice touch you see on inter-city trains outside the US is that the conductor/train manager gets their own little office that they can use, instead of taking up 7 of the 8 tables in the café car like they do on Amtrak...

COVID-19 was 6.5 years ago at this point. Ridership should be even bigger and better now! Everyone else moved on years ago. It's only the nation's transit agencies that wake up each morning scratching their heads wondering why things aren't the same as they were 7 years ago...

RT I've spent last 2 wks travelling by rail across France and Germany. The trains over here are by no means a picture of perfect reliability. But the major difference is there's just so much more redundancy in the network that when delays do happen, it's not as hard to keep moving.

I'll believe it when I see it... Virtually every fare change the MTA has made in the last ~4 years have made things less flexible and more expensive for riders. They don't seem to be learning any lessons.

These builders grounded their scaffold by welding a wire to the running rail of the street tram. How many reams of forms and insurance paperwork would be needed to do this with the MTA in New York?

The amount of subsidies the MTA is raking in its miles ahead of pre-COVID levels, so they don't care. Similar issue on the railroads. Fare policy is a very effective knob that can be turned to boost ridership. But MTA would rather nuke that than make conductors to their jobs.

Lower ridership allows the MTA to justify reducing service further and raising fares to increase revenue. This is a vicious cycle and it's why getting rid of monthly unlimiteds was the dumbest thing the MTA did... unless their intention was actually to reduce ridership to justify service reductions.

Of course I take the free Citibike ride, because I paid for that upfront... just like I would've seen the subway ride as free if I paid for a monthly unlimited upfront. The MTA's fare policy literally discourages ridership. Discouraging ridership means we'll never get back to pre-Covid levels.

Question is will PANYNJ soften the major fare hikes since ridership is exceeding expectations, or will they be greedy like the MTA and shoot themselves in the foot by sacrificing further growth for higher fares?

Bad day on Central Park West... Things happen, but if there is no downtown service and they are diverting B service, shouldn't there be more than a C train every 20+ minutes at these local stops? MTA needs to put more effort into mitigating disruptions.

Extending the 5:13pm train to Montauk year-round is a nice boost, but again the LIRR has a huge travel time problem. Even with a one-seat ride, this trip is sloooow since it makes all local stops between Babylon and Montauk. 3 hours 17 minutes 💀

Going to see the Mets, and tried out the $5 LIRR discount promotion. It's a bit of a process (you have to buy tickets, then 'purchase' the code separately, the morning of game you get a link which attaches the discount in TrainTime), but it does work.

The lack of transparency on MTA alerts has gotten really frustrating. Similarly true when there *is* an alert but they make it seem like a minor disruption but then it takes 30 minutes to make a few local stops 😑 Doesn't help that the conductors are always unintelligible!

Same train was 6 minutes late...then 5 minutes early...then 5 minutes late again. Imagine if this was a real railroad with real schedules. Maybe we'd be able to get places in a timely manner once in a while instead of fluffing up LIRR's OTP stats.

So what did the MTA honestly expect with this? Unless MTA is prepared to use its preemption powers and build itself, no municipality is going to want these guys to come in and tell them how to do things. $1 million down the drain for another study that will rot on shelf... libn.com/2026/08/24/m...

A big problem since East Side Access has been the steady erosion of travel times. LIRR used to do HVL-JAM-NYK in 40 minutes. None do it that fast today. There's 1 AM Peak train that does it in 41 minutes. But most are now 45-50+. Certainly helps fluff up the OTP stats...
