Yeah, my doctor was basically "How much do you want to have a stroke" which was pretty sobering. I was NOT eating very healthily.

My doctor put me on a low sodium diet a few months ago, and after the initial panic of discovering that basically all the food I loved is packed full of salt I've adjusted pretty well. Spices are wonderful and it's fun to learn new recipes. Eating out is very much a crapshoot though.

My 12th grade English teacher in 1990 refused to accept typed papers because they might have been done on a word processor and he considered spell check cheating. He kept teaching another 16 years so I assume he changed at some point but at the time he was very serious about it.

A friend told my wife and I that getting married and settling down was our midlife crisis. 8 years later I'm a househusband and looking after my elderly parents. I've also stopped drinking and started paying attention to my diet. It's not a bad life.

As a teen I worked at a gas station selling people scratch tickets. I would not have thought that people could destroy their lives over 1$ scratch-offs, but I watched it happen. I think about how much worse off my customers would've been if they could have gambled on their phones.

My mom was born in the early '40s and she told me once that when she was a kid she couldn't understand why everyone hated Stalin so much because she thought he looked like a happy jolly fat man in all his pictures. I think about that all the time.
