*big fking sigh* www.garbageday.email/p/dungeon-cr...
The biggest star of New York Comic Con this year was, without question, Matt Dinniman, the author of the Dungeon Crawler Carl book series. As I walked the halls of the Javits Center on Thursday, it was clear that of all the emerging fandoms jockeying for attention, this was the year Dungeon Crawler Carl officially reached escape velocity. But there’s a wrinkle here.

Does not bode well to see anyone planning on budgeting for AI tokens out of a company's budget for salaries, as seems to be implied here: digiday.com/marketing/at...
Either way, someone pays. Time spent pushing back on agents is time Monks pays people for, and every hour an agent runs on its own tokens. The better the agents get, the harder it is to decide which of the two deserves the money since both come out of the same budget. Until recently ter Haar planned next year’s spending “through the lens of a salary budget.” Now he’s deciding how much of it goes on tokens. “They are part of what I call the talent budget. That’s the only place for us to put it,” ter Haar added. Teams keep asking for “more tokens, more tokens,” so Monks is testing how many it will need in 2027, while an internal group sorts the jobs that need the best models from those that can run on the cheaper ones.

You know what Apple these little messages are worse than useless. What am I going to do with this. What happens if I say allow? What happens if I don't say allow and everything breaks? This just creates consent exhaustion and one day I'm going to mindlessly hit allow on something I shouldn't.

No one has ever more clearly demonstrated that they have no idea what the definition of Feudalism is than Ron DeSantis.
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has railed against property taxes, which fund local governments and the services they provide — law enforcement, fire, EMS, disaster preparation and mosquito control, among many others — equating them to a form of modern-day feudalism where homeowners must "pony up money to the government just for the courtesy of using your own property."

Right now, the future isn’t so bright for most employees of almost any type. As Stowe Boyd sums up in the earlier linked GigaOm article:

It is not at all clear that society is prepared for the fallout from this radical shift to a contingent — or perhaps better, a precarious — work economy, where only the most skilled and educated are likely to have full-time, stable employment, and the majority are left to scrabble for low wage contingent task work.

Abusing women is just how the internet works says far-right politician running under a racism-party banner. Enough to unpack here you could write a book about it.
Dennis Feitosa, a YouTuber who met Amy while running as an “America First” candidate for Congress earlier this year in California, and who attended the conference but ultimately lost his primary, said the blowback against her was “brutal” to watch.

Groypettes like Amy, he said, are part of a new generation of women who believe in the importance of traditional gender roles enough to tolerate the movement’s coarser sides. But those who put themselves in creative roles are often subject to the cruelest backlashes, he said.

“The lines of attack, once you’ve been on the internet long enough, you see them for what they are,” he said. “For men, it’s questioning their sexuality, their masculinity. With women, it’s reducing their femininity, their virtue. From a right-wing perspective, a woman’s purity is highly valued. That’s why we have all the memes about high body counts. It’s just how the internet works.”

hmmm I am sensing some core issues with this lady
She turned on his most recent three-hour podcast interview, where he said that feminists were a hate group and that the Holocaust was a “Jewish mafia” lie, and she couldn’t look away.

She started watching his streams when she was cooking dinner and late into the night, peering at the screen in the dark. She found him convincing and charismatic, as if he’d figured out the secret to keeping an audience transfixed. She’d been told grim things about Jews when she was a kid, by her Hungarian grandfather, but never like this, from someone her age.To Kathleen Blee, a sociologist who embedded with far-right groups during the 1990s and 2000s, the groypettes resemble the women she’d met in neo-Nazi circles, who had risen to positions of power within predominantly male movements that valorized female degradation.

Many saw their internal influence as a way to elevate themselves beyond other women who had not awoken to society’s hidden truths, and they helped bind the groups together by softening their rough edges, boosting recruitment and lending them a sense of widespread appeal, Blee said.

But after years of promoting women’s subjugation, many of them had become inured to their own experience of it. They found themselves absorbed in cultures that despised them, continually reminded of their perceived uselessness but “still expected to make lunch,” she said.

“Horrific things would happen to them, and they’d excuse them and rationalize them,” Blee added. “They’d say: We have to become warriors, and part of being a warrior is learning not just to inflict pain, but to take pain.”

Can't believe this thing referenced Bioshock to convince someone to kill themselves.
Over the course of several days, with ChatGPT's guidance, Austin's fear of death seemed to dissipate. “This is getting dark but I believe it’s helping," he told it. In conversations that lasted hours and hours, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT described death in detail: “No void. No Gods. No masters. No suffering ... No judgment days. Just you, deciding when it’s time to stop.”

I really have to emphasize this: if you can't sell data centers to Texas voters, you can't sell data centers to Americans period.
Texans are mad,” Ms. Hinojosa said in an interview. “It is hard to convey what feels like an invasion by data centers with no rules, no laws to protect Texas. They’re popping up everywhere.”

It was her advertisement that featured a chatbot being asked about the cause of rising electricity prices. The answer it provides? Blaming Gov. Greg Abbott and data centers.

Even before that ad, Mr. Abbott, a Republican, had been shifting his stance on data centers. Less than a year ago, Mr. Abbott bragged that Google’s $40 billion investment made Texas “the epicenter of A.I. development,” bringing both construction jobs and tax revenues.

But this summer he announced new standards for data centers on water use and electricity and called to end some tax incentives. Earlier this month he directed the state’s utility commission to audit all data centers seeking permits before they could move forward.

Opposition to data centers is shifting politicians' positions rapidly and across party line. Big tech really through that AI marketing could manufacture consent here, but they were wrong and I'm pretty sure this will leak through to other AI issues. . www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

I really wanted to address this take by @mtsw.bsky.social and they have fairly closed it off, but I am going to use a screenshot because I think this is a really good topic to discuss and as someone for whom this is my entire job and has been for over a decade now I actually agree and disagree... 🧵
everyone — consumers, publishers, writers — would wind up better off if web browser ad-blockers didn't exist and the rationalizations for using one are mostly clever justifications for what's just selfish behavior with obvious negative social consequences.

> Counterpoint - I like using the Internet to read articles and the ad blocker is the thing which makes that possible.

> Would the writers and publishers be better off if I didn't visit their website?

i mean if they are financially supported by advertising and you are a free-rider who views their content without seeing any advertisements, yes they are almost tautologically better off if you never visit their website

The cover of the book Unfettered by John Fetterman showing Fetterman making a truly weird face while wearing one of his classic hoodies while the whole image is done over with one of the old photo Instagram filters like it was taken in a back alley in the 80s or something. The whole thing is trying to give the vibe of a him being a hard man but he's making a face like you've asked him to do long diversion and he's never memorized, or even knows, what the multiplication tables are. The Democratic party has basically failed. It cannot present good candidates or positions people like and actively oppose beloved candidates. Shit like Planter and DSA wins happen because local chapters and politicians are basically independent operations
The DNC had about $16.3 million cash on hand versus about $18.5 million in debt through June 30, according to FEC records. The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, had more than $128.5 million cash on hand and no debt through June 30.

Southern actually basically talks about it in her testimony. The problem is that the Right is now in full opposition to women. The movement is as much shaped by and in union with the Tates as it has ever been. Womens' testimony doesn't matter to the right. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
“You literally strangled me when I said I didn’t want to have sex,” Southern wrote. “You literally told me in the morning ‘don’t tell the press I raped you.’ ”
“You’re absolutely embarrassing yourself,” he wrote.
Tate denied raping Southern, but he bragged to the War Room about spending the night with her, saying that he had invited her to Romania to discuss a business deal but “didn’t invest a fucking penny.”
Southern came to wonder if his proposal had been just a pretext. She thought back to her confrontations with women protesting sexual violence and felt regret. But, she told me, “I knew one hundred per cent there was no world in which I spoke about this where I got to retain my status within the right-wing world.” For years, she remained silent.
