Hubble and Legacy Survey image of Arp 282, also known as NGC 169 and NGC 169A. Interactions between the two galaxies create delicate streams that visibly link the pair. Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, J. Dalcanton, Judy Schmidt, Legacy Surveys, D. Lang, NERSC Source
A large spiral galaxy is seen in the center of the frame. It's tilted at an angle, so that it's disk appears as an oval rather than a circle. Dramatic dust lanes cross in front of the center of the galaxy and are backlit by a haze of yellow-white stars. Below the spiral is a smaller disk galaxy seen in shades of blue white. It appears to be at almost a right angle to the large spiral, falling out of the larger galaxy. The two galaxies are connected by a bridge of dusty tendrils, which are also backlit by the main galaxy. This galaxy pair looks a lot more 3D than most interacting galaxies because of their angles and the backlighting effect.

Always assumed life as an anti-colonialist armed guerrilla would be quite tough but judging by the cover of this 1978 dub album I might have been mistaken.
Cover of “Guerilla Dub” (Burning Sounds, 1978) which shows a very happy guerrilla in green fatigues holding a rifle above his head and bustin’ outta tha jungle.

Amazing feature from Reuters about one Ukrainian infantryman's experience of 326 days *hiding from flying killer robots* in a foxhole in Donetsk. Serhii Krynitskyi kept a video diary on his phone, so be sure to watch the video feature that's included (I'd link to it directly if I could).

A year in a foxhole: How one Ukrainian soldier survived beneath the front lines
The drafted infantryman's video diaries chart his marathon ordeal hiding in a small, isolated dugout carved out in the heart of Ukraine's drone-infested "kill zone".

This is a real image. Taken by Voyager 1 in 1979, the icy moon Europa floats above Jupiter's swirling Red Spot maelstrom. The shadow is from Io, another of Jupiter's large inner moons, which is out of frame. Oh to see this view with my own eyes (safely shielded from the lethal radiation fields)
The swirling face of Jupiter, with the Great Red Spot at lower right. At lower left, difficult to discern from the cloudy backdrop, is Europa, lit from the right. At upper right is a dark circle—the shadow of Io.

Did you hear about the DC July 4 fireworks show? It promises 850,000 fireworks in 40 minutes. That's 354 per second. You'll miss up to 142 of them every time you blink. For your edutainment, I proudly present the nerdiest thing you will read about this dangerously absurd / absurdly dangerous event.

Three Hundred Fifty-Four Fireworks per Second — Chad M. Topaz
Organizers promise 850,000 fireworks in roughly 40 minutes over the National Mall this Saturday. I did what a mathematician does with a big number: I divided. It did not make the show look better.

No less than 60 million stars in one image. It's possible thanks to ESA's Euclid mission. For just one day, Euclid turned its gaze to the crowded heart of the Milky Way and captured the largest, most detailed photo ever taken of our galaxy's centre in visible light. Let's dive deeper 👇 🔭 🧪 ☄️ 1/8
A dense field of tiny stars fills this square image taken by the European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope. The lower and central areas are dominated by bright yellow and gold colours, forming a textured background similar to fine glitter or sand. Dark brown and black patches cut irregularly through the yellow regions, like ink stains or clouds of smoke. Toward the upper left, the colours shift to purple and reddish tones, blending gently into the surrounding star field. Small blue points of light are scattered across the image.

Occurs to me that we’re at the end of an ultimately very anomalous century-long evidentiary golden age during which it was extremely easy to produce an accurate visual/auditory record of reality, and relatively difficult to produce a false one.

"Content" is something to fill an empty vessel: it repositions your view of the world to align with corporations. Art becomes something disposable, fungible, serving a financial interest and nothing more. The word "artist" is right there; I beg you to claim it and leave "content creator" to molder

With current pledges, the world's on track for 2.6°C of warming in 2100 compared to preindustrial levels. 10 years ago, before the Paris agreement, it was 3.6°C 20+ years ago, we thought it would be 4-5°C So 2.6°C is better, but the problem is that climate impacts are way worse than we predicted.

I’ll keep pushing this line of analysis because I’m increasingly convinced the clearest path out of this mess is for Dems to adopt a relentless anti-corruption, anti-inequality, anti-oligarchy, pro-democracy platform. The Dem leadership hasn’t realized it yet, but they’re now a reform party.
