LOL! It’s Arkansas. 75.4% of the state is white, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the vast majority (51.92%) of their Medicaid recipients are white, according to ARDHS’s 2024 statistical report (the latest one available online). Black recipients came in 2nd at 20.49%, so it’s not even close.

Loved this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece and he identifies the healthcare.gov website debacle as the christening event for civic tech, which is interesting to think about in terms of healthcare as pushing new governing forms (and both the good and ill after effects of that)

LLMs don't work for biology because sequence doesn't predict structure. The absolute best they can do is plagiarize a known functional sequence, they can't make a new discovery. Until we get enough compute (i.e. quantum computing) to do physics models, ML will be near useless in drug discovery.

WaPo's six sources can't even agree whether the Trump Administration has concealed four KIA or five KIA from the public 😐
More American service members have died in the Middle East during the ongoing Iran war than the Pentagon has disclosed publicly, according to six U.S. officials familiar with the Defense Department’s internal casualty accounting data.

Five of the officials said there have been at least 22 military fatalities — four more than what appears in the Pentagon’s public database, known as the Defense Casualty Analysis System, or DCAS.

A sixth official, who like the others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the figures, said 23 service members have died since Feb. 28, when the Trump administration, in concert with Israel, initiated the Iran war. Not all of the undisclosed deaths are directly tied to the conflict but have involved U.S. personnel who were in the Middle East amid ongoing hostilities, this person said.

They despise the city as political/cultural space, but also fear it so much and avoid it for the same reason: It is the living proof they are wrong, particularly wrt what happens when the "other" is no longer excluded/subjugated. Mamdani is their worst nightmare for many reasons, but also this one.
The lure of community, powerful and prevalent in left as well as right politics, has been questioned often enough. In contrast, hybridity when thought of as politics may be subversive of essentialism and homogeneity, disruptive of static spatial and political categories of centre and periphery, high and low, class and ethnos, and in recognizing multiple identities, widen the space for critical engagement. Thus the nostalgia paradigm of community politics has been contrasted to the landscape of the city, along with a reading of ‘politics as relations among strangers’.

The Joffrey Ballet being founded by the son of an Afghan immigrant chili pushcart vendor is what makes America great www.newyorker.com/magazine/201...
Not every tamale vender in the West was from Afghanistan, of course, and not every Afghan vender sold tamales. A smaller but still significant group, for instance, sold chili, as Zarif Khan later did in his restaurant.
(One such vender, Dollha Jaffa Khan, got his start with a pushcart in Seattle, in 1916, before opening a successful chili parlor there. Later, Jaffa Khan changed his name to Joseph Joffrey; his son Robert went on to found the Joffrey Ballet.) But it was the Afghan tamale venders who were so common as to become a stereotypeakin to Turkish coffee-shop owners, Syrian rug dealers, and Jewish pawnbrokers.
