you know how new tech often influences the metaphors we use for the brain and then people come to use the metaphor to understand how the brain itself works (“tools to theories heuristic”) - have people just not done that with LLMs?

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

oh good, six laws of history (what a new idea), and a rejection of the idea that “ history is not composed of solid events linked in a causal chain” (what is a solid event?). Instead it is “fluid processes”, a bit like this word soup…

seems to me quite bad that we are relying on class snobbery and the state’s monopoly on violence to turn the tide against Thompson and his racist mob - people calling for the full violence of state (which will never happen) against these thugs are risking legitimising it

re: these racist thugs in the channel, and racist villagers declaring independence: they are not seen as a threat because they represent an intensification of both border violence, & fantasies of purity - but at some point the fact that this intensification is beyond control of the state will bite

OOOOOOO! Stefan Collini is to give the Nicolai Rubinstein Lecture! On 12 November at 6pm, @qmulsse.bsky.social is the place to be! Excuse to re-read his What Are Universities For?
Picture of a paragraph from a book. The underlined text reads: one rough and ready distinction between university education and professional training is that education relativises and constantly calls into question the information which training simply transmits. In this sense, education encourages the student to recognise the ways in which particular bits of knowledge are not fixed or eternal or universal or self-sufficient. That may be done about almost any subject matter though it can only be done through engagement with some particular subject matter, not simply be ingesting a set of abstract propositions about the contingency of knowledge.

From: Stefan Collini, What are Universities For? (Penguin, 2012), p. 56

this bit from Jonathan Liew's piece on the very sad recent events around Raheem Sterling, and of *children* playing profession football, hits me right in the fucking gut
And by any measure, Sterling is one of the lucky ones. The teenager who made it, who scaled the peaks, won 82 international caps, four league titles, worked under one of the greatest managers of all time, who tasted the manna even if it eventually choked him. How many other thousands of lives you will never see have been fruitlessly and callously bent and twisted towards this world: skills you will never witness, names you will never hear? [Highlighted in yellow:] How much humanity are we prepared to fling into this machine in order for it to provide us with entertainment?

More artists withdrawing from the Ed Sheeran tour over his decision to drop Macklemore for his pro-Palestine stance

Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed.
I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran.
I stand with Palestine and its people.beogamusic • 22m

We have made the decision to depart as Ed Sheeran's band on the remaining US Loop tour, following the silencing of Macklemore by zionist lobbies.
We are a traditional Irish band who never saw ourselves playing in stadiums of that size and that opportunity is not lost on us. We have been friends with Ed for over 10 years now and will continue to be. We believe in dialogue as a means of progressing the plight of the Palestinian people.aaronrowe__
I have made the decision to withdraw as a support act for Ed Sheeran's 'The Loop' North American Tour.
I don't take the decision lightly. Ed has been a friend to me and has changed my life, I could never thank him enough for this.
But as Irish people we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation.
I cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide and who highlight the savage murder of children.
I would lose all respect for myself to carry on as normal.
I need to be true to myself and my ancestors who resisted colonisation, and fought for a freedom that I enjoy today in Ireland.

“If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change.” thanks Ed what should we do instead? “I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too.” Ok. So don’t shout loudly, keep your secret feelings to yourself? That’ll do it.
