A Westminster Hall Debate on Monday, October 12, will discuss the UK's application to
join the EU, triggered by a petition that gathered 111,687 signatures earlier this year. It is
the first chance our parliamentarians will have to discuss the options that Andy Burnham
opened the door to in the closing minutes of his speech to conference.
For years, Labour MPs have loyally trotted out the red lines: that there will be no return to
the single market, customs union or, whisper it, to EU membership. Being generous, the
rationale for this Ming vase-style method stemmed from a fear of handing Reform UK a
gift in Leave-voting seats.
share
But all along the fear was trained
The wrong target. Labour isn't losing these seats
because Reform UK is winning over Labour voters, it's losing them because the party's
own 2024 coalition has scattered, to the Greens, Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru, and
transformed into non-voters, with Reform UK reaping the rewards and coming through
the middle. Being cautious on Europe exacerbates precisely this danger.

A good read but I wish everyone would instead of using “will of the people” point out that less than 40% of the electorate voted Leave. That as Parliament recognised in 1977 when it set a 40% threshold for devolution is not the will of the people.

Side-by-side comparison of three social media posts announcing the death of former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert at age 84. On the left, Fox News posts, “BREAKING: Dennis Hastert, longest-serving Republican House speaker, dead at 84,” above a photo of Hastert raising his hand at a microphone. In the center, CBS News posts, “Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died,” above a photo of Hastert walking through the U.S. Capitol. On the right, MeidasTouch posts, “Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker in history, has died at 84. Hastert admitted in federal court to sexually abusing boys he coached as a high school wrestling coach. A federal judge called him a ‘serial child molester.’ He was a registered sex offender.” The MeidasTouch post includes an image of Hastert speaking from the House floor with a C-SPAN chyron identifying him as Speaker of the House.
