Exactly. The EU is mostly a union of values, not just money. In the end we all benefit by helping countries develop faster than they could have on their own.

2/2 The EU doesn’t own media, TV channels or popular newspapers; is not in its brief and will never be. So the EU can’t lead the debate. It’s UK politicians and the society at large who should demand it.

I don’t trust Burnham at all - particularly whilst Mahmood remains in post - but he’s clearly a more skilful politician than Starmer. He knows enough to at least throw us a bone, rather than telling us to fuck off, the way Starmer did.

What's been missing is someone prepared to make the case for free movement, Schengen etc, to actually change people's minds. It's ridiculous to assert that 'we are where we are' and the Brits 'will never accept etc' without at least attempting to make a positive case FOR Europe.

I think it was clear it was within the country. He was good at articulating how good Labour tradition was since 1945 (NHS and all that), but he couldn’t bring himself to articulate the other Labour tradition to be an internationalist party which meant an internationalist vision of the world.

There needs to be a consensus among all the major UK parties before it makes any sense for the EU to even address a UK application to join. If the UK doesn’t know what it wants it will be pointless.

Andy Burnham to LP conference. Adequate for you, for pro-Europeans? Three small points: Firstly it looks like he's reaching for language on this, which is possibly a reflection of not being clear in his mind. However... 1
Net migration down more than 80% since the peak of the Boris Johnson era.

Conference, we make these changes but we will always grateful – always, and we thank them – to those whose who have come here and are contributing to our country.

Than you, to them.

But control over immigration was weakened when we lost collaboration with our European partners.

And we are still having to work hard to bring it back.

Later this year, there will be a UK-EU summit where one of the issues on the agenda will be how we best work together on immigration.

And beyond that we will work to secure gains for our industries most harmed by Brexit.

Conference, these are important concrete steps.

But they are not enough.

I say this to you and the country.

We will not give Britain the clear path we need into the rest of the century until we decide on a long-term relationship with what is still our largest market.

I cannot say to you truthfully that where we are is good enough.

Brexit has done more harm

That is a major issue indeed. Support for the EU collapses the minute people are told that there will be no opt outs. The UK left because it couldn’t rule the EU. They won’t join the EU unless they think that they can. Change will be great. It is all up to the UK except for the final decision.
