The numbers are in for our first full month of energy use with solar panels Last May our energy bill was £140. This May, after adding panels, our bill was £48. £28 of that was standing charges. So in a sunny month, our bills have dropped by two thirds. This is without being paid for export yet.
Bar chart showing daily energy costs for May 2026. Total combined bill: £48.19 (energy £20.36, standing charge £27.83). Daily costs are mostly between £1–£2, with notable spikes in mid-to-late May reaching approximately £3.75 at the highest point when gas was used on cold days for heating. Standing charges (shown in pale pink/grey) remain consistent throughout the month at just under £1 per day.

Cut cost of loans for solar panels on UK homes, ministers urged
Report says ‘solar bonds’ could fund wider access to clean energy, reducing household bills Solar panels could be cheaper for people on lower incomes if the government stepped in to reduce the cost of loans, a report argues. Solar panel installations can save households hundreds of pounds a year in energy bills, but at an initial cost of about £5,000 to £10,000 they are beyond the reach of many households.
