it isn't just friction-heavy, it relies on you having access to the cash to pay up-front and the be reimbursed. I didn't realise this and had to take out a credit card to pay for my install,

quite right - if Scotland were to ditch Home Energy Scotland heat pump grants and instead have DESNZ implement BUS here, + implement Warm Home loans, eg via credit unions, heat pump adoption would accelerate markedly. As was covered by the Herald last year: www.heraldscotland.com/opinion/2515...

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

This is a low key tragedy. A broad consensus torched by a handful of ideologues and opportunists who do not even understand what net zero target is and why it was adopted. The reality is temperatures will continue to spiral until we reach net zero or civilisation collapses, whichever comes first.

I was a comms intern at NRDC in 2004. I remember writing back then about how climate change was not just gradual warming but was going to cause increasingly frequent and extreme weather events. Yesterday I was writing basically the same thing and realized I've been saying this for over two decades.

Something seemingly on no politician's radar: In the UK countryside, most houses are heated by oil. Right now, 95% of our village has about 500 liters of super-flammable heating oil in their gardens. During wildfire-season. We should prioritise people moving from heating oil to electric heat pumps.

2003 was once exceptional. Now it's average. 2024's record will be average by the mid-2040s. The extreme summers of the 2040s don't bear thinking about! 🌡🥵😬 #ClimateEmergency After @edhawkins.org & @stottpeter.bsky.social using ERA5 + CMIP6.
European summer temperature, June to August, over 10°W-40°E, 30-50°N, the region Stott et al. used for the 2003 heatwave, relative to 1961-1990. The black line shows ERA5 observations from 1950 to 2025, rising from about zero in the mid-twentieth century to 2.75°C in 2024. Grey shading is the 5-95% range of 34 CMIP6 models over the historical period, blue shading the same models under SSP2-4.5 to 2100, with the running median in white. Two dotted lines mark the 2003 summer at 2.06°C and the 2024 summer at 2.75°C, each dropping to the year the model median reaches that level: 2027 and 2045. Model region approximated by the IPCC AR6 Mediterranean and West & Central Europe regions, weighted 0.75 to 0.25.

Tesco is extending its Kids Eat Free scheme to 7 days a week over the summer, where children get a free meal with an adult purchase, but honestly, this detail about how small the adult purchase can be broke my heart.
The Café and The Coffee Shop in Tesco will be offering one free Kids Hot Meal Deal, Kids Breakfast or Kids Pick ‘n’ Mix deal with any full price adult purchase when they scan their Tesco Clubcard. **The adult purchase could be something as small as an apple costing just 65 pence.** And with no limit to the number of Kid’s meals you can redeem, families of all sizes can benefit too.
