Very strangely the 10 trade unions calling on the government not to approve the Rosebank oil field are getting a lot less coverage today than the one trade union calling on the government to green light more fossil fuel projects. www.businessgreen.com/news/4537337...

'Outright arson': Trade unions urge government to reject Rosebank oil field
Group of 10 trade unions argues approving major new fossil fuel project in wake of record-breaking summer would be anything but 'pragmatic'

What does the SNP do to pass the time as it "waits for independence""? One thing it does not do on the evidence post-2014 is think seriously abt independence. Abt why Yes lost in 2014, abt the hard choices, how the world has changed since 2014, & how to speak to the Scotland not convinced.

Earlier this year, E3G released a big report with the Department of War Studies at Kings College which showed that our dependence on gas is a major national security risk. Cutting heat pumps to fund defence is like not paying for a flu jab so you can buy lemsip. It makes no sense.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

fully support you on this but I think you can make the argument even simpler, and thereby draw in more support: stop attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure and respect the internationally recognised 1967 borders.

This motion affects only the Green Party of England and Wales. Although the Scottish Green Party seems to have been happy to ride Polanski‘s coat tails up until this point.

The thing that gets me about these lurid anti-Zionist statements, like the one the Greens just passed, is that it is *so fucking easy* to criticise the Israeli government without engaging in that type of language.

Ah ok. Well deep retrofit of that kind definitely doesn’t pay for itself. Payback is hundreds of years. And you’re still burning fossil fuels so you still have to get a HP. Hp will get better as more appropriate tech emerges for smaller uk homes. I think actual boiler lifecycles is under 15 years.

What do you mean by shell and core? Interesting thought on boiler replacement cycle. At @locohome.bsky.social were aiming for older (pre-1919) and large houses where the savings in absolute terms are big enough to give decent pay back. Also they are the biggest polluters.

better if you are in rural area (£9k grant) and even better if you are on oil. if you have storage heaters then better to consider a small air to air system for £2-5k to cover most of the heat demand.

Chris Carus @chris-carus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
yes I’ve been looking at that a lot. Only pays back within lifespan of heat pump (15y) if you have good performance of say SPF 3.5, use a smart tariff and have a high heat demand equivalent to 20000kwh of gas supply.

it isn't just friction-heavy, it relies on you having access to the cash to pay up-front and the be reimbursed. I didn't realise this and had to take out a credit card to pay for my install,

quite right - if Scotland were to ditch Home Energy Scotland heat pump grants and instead have DESNZ implement BUS here, + implement Warm Home loans, eg via credit unions, heat pump adoption would accelerate markedly. As was covered by the Herald last year: www.heraldscotland.com/opinion/2515...

Heat pump installers are losing payments and pulling out of taking on new jobs. And all because of the way Scotland's heat pump grants work

I’very been quite liking the state pension ratchet up in real terms ahead of my own retirement about 18 years from now. Would not like to learn today, or worse later, that I’ll be more dependent on my own savings.

This is a low key tragedy. A broad consensus torched by a handful of ideologues and opportunists who do not even understand what net zero target is and why it was adopted. The reality is temperatures will continue to spiral until we reach net zero or civilisation collapses, whichever comes first.

Yes I think the Whitehall crowd‘s assumption that all productivity tools lead to economic growth (and good economic growth, not simply concentrating wealth) is looking pretty flimsy with AI. 10% chance it destroys everything as well which is probably net negative on GDP.

Chris Carus @chris-carus.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Is it only my jealousy/desire for schadenfraude that says this is only linked to the AI investment bubble which is about to burst - rather than any actual productivity gains?

My point is that the use of AI needs to be controlled, not only the location of the data centres.

Chris Carus @chris-carus.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I’m not a subscriber so can’t read your piece Craig. But hundreds of thousands of Scots are relying on AI to tell them what to have for tea, mke silly cartoons, summarise docs and other banalities. (Not me, mind.) why should the data centres for that be in someone else’s back yard?

I agree data centres have huge environmental impacts that should be controlled. What is your view on AI use by Scottish citizens And businesses? To be consistent you should also call for a moratorium on the use of ChatGPT, Gemini etc in Scotland otherwise this is simply nimbyism.

What I struggle with here is whether we should hold off on individual heat pump deployment and wait for heat networks. Probably not but every individual heat pump takes away from the already challenging economics of a network.
