Its tempting to bemoan MSP calibre and bad behaviour. But parliament should be give newly elected amateur legislators the opportunity to become expert representatives. That this doesn't happen enough is partly MSPs' responsibility, but it's also about their context - parliament, media, etc.

The child maintenance service is riddled with legacy "incentives" that aim to put separated families off using state funded support. That's why it has fees and barriers to getting help, and feels to many who use if like residual service offered begrudgingly.

Manifestos are never perfect, but the 2026 Holyrood editions leave big holes where clear policy agendas are needed - on climate, on inequality. Pinning so much hope on growth without a clear story as to why it has been so disappointing since the financial crisis is a very risky strategy.

The headline child poverty rate (21% average across financial years 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25) does not bode well for Scottish government to hit its 2030 target (10%). But with changes to the methodology behind the stats there is noise in the data that we should avoid over-interpreting.

Scottish government prevarication on heat in buildings continues. In 2020 SG committed £1.6bn over this parliament, later raised to £1.8bn. Today's spending review commits £1.3bn to 2030. This is a cut to a budget that was already below the level it needs to reach.
