You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

I remember my mother scoffing at a woman who'd written into the Radio Times to say Chris Barrie should play Mr Rochester. Rewatching Red Dwarf recently (I've just got to the series pictured) I can finally acknowledge what an erotic presence he was to me as an 11-year-old, especially in this persona.

There's a dinky Everyman's Library book called Picturehouse Poems, mainly US poems about the cinema, and it contains several gems, including this one which I can't find elsewhere online.
OLD FRANKENSTEIN

The old man never calls.
He quit making us
settled down with his bride
in a stone cottage
went back to his smoking jacket
wrote a book and tore it up
they say, I never saw it.

I learned to talk again
in spite of them all
every crowd and Burgomaster
—read by fires, by lakes
ate what I ran across
but killed no people
not for a long time now.

The flesh has not decayed, probably can't.
I carry a cane and that explains the walk.
I dress like a cheap old man
a man with peculiarities
a man you'd leave alone
to live in a shed in the woods.
He'll die, I won't.

He can't live forever
and he doesn't like it when I show up.
I haven't tried that in twenty years.
I accumulate birthdays like everyone else.
He could call. His wife
could call. My only family.
I wonder how it will be without him.

Excellent way to spend 17 minutes: a super new video of the choir of St John's doing Rejoice in the Lamb last year in Ely Cathedral. They're the only choir I know who don't think twice about bunging Rejoice in the Lamb in an evensong as the anthem, and it's the highlight of my week whenever they do.

Famous in my part of north-east Somerset, an assembly when the local Gideon preacher told a story of some German schoolchildren he had observed failing to abide by queue etiquette and wondered 'if they might have got that idea from a man called Hitler'.

Brittain co-wrote with Bernard Manning (not that one, another fellow of Jesus) one of my favourite things, a little pamphlet called 'Babylon bruis'd and Mount Moriah mended', a parody report of C17th puritans 'cleaning up' Cambridge chapels. Not laugh-out-loud funny exactly but worth a look.

Stephanie Cole’s Talking Heads monologue, Soldiering On, is one of the saddest and most brilliant things, and her turn as Dame Lettie in Memento Mori was absolute comic terror. In interviews I never got the feeling she knew how great she was. And wasn’t she absolutely magnificent?

I never feared it was coming Over Here, but at 8 I was terrified of having to be a soldier one day. A concatenation of things: the news, Snoopy as the Red Baron, Roald Dahl's Boy/Going Solo (horrible books to give to children that young; the bit when he has his adenoids out was also nightmarish).

Every year on this day I recall the awful moment when Frasier's producer Maggie Blanc phoned to tell me that the show's co-creator David Angell and his wife Lynn were on the first plane to hit the towers. A week later the Advocate asked me to write about David for their 9/11 issue. (1/2)
David Angell sitting in Martin's chair on the Frasier set.A photo of an article in the Advocate. There's a smiling picture of David Angell. The heading reads: "A creator and executive producer of Frasier is remembered by his colleague Joe Keenan. The text of the article reads: One day in the Frasier writer’s room we were toying with the idea that Niles, insolvent and desperate during his epic divorce from Maris, might stoop to writing a quickie self-help book, the sort that shamelessly flatters its readers in the hopes of achieving best-sellerdom. We needed a title for it, something both punchy and pandering. As we were all calling out uninspired suggestions I glanced over at David Angell. He smiled to himself then, adopting a look of foot-stomping petulance, said, “It’s Not Your Fault, Dammit!’ by Dr. Niles Crane.”
We laughed at its ludicrous perfection, or at least those of us who’d heard him did. David was very quiet, very soft-spoken. Unlike many humor writers who like to think out loud (making it hard for others to think at all), David mulled each comedy challenge in silence, speaking only when he felt he had something good, which he pretty much always did. He brought the same quiet wryness to his conversation and his remarks were all the funnier for his murmured, throwaway delivery. He understood, to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, that a boy’s best friend is his mutter.
He was a wonderful writer, always smart, always witty, the dialogue pitch perfect. Sometimes in the room his usual low-key drollness would give way to bursts of inspired goofiness that were both hilarious and incongruous, like a humanities professor interrupting his lecture on Middlemarch to share his Porky Pig impression. Most of all he understood that a good show wasn’t about jokes; it was about people, and telling stories about them that involve us and surprise us and make us need to know what happens next.
As good a writer as David was, he was an even better person, unfailingly kind and generous. I’ll always be especially grateful for the su…
