Only a financial journalist would look at academic publishing and think "what that sector needs is more mergers and private equity" to deal with the mess that financialisation has caused. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Mergers could help by creating savings that offset the increased costs of quality control. The industry’s biggest four groups account for two-fifths of articles published. That leaves plenty of scope to roll up the unwieldy long tail that includes university publishers and professional organisations such as IEEE. There have been a few smaller transactions so far, such as Wiley’s £337mn acquisition of Emerald Publishing in June. But Informa’s decision earlier this week to separate Taylor & Francis from its live events business may give dealmakers a boost.

Private equity can help, having already dipped a toe into the sector: Springer Nature was previously owned by companies including EQT and BC Partners. And the financials still look attractive.

ALSO Justice and vengeance are two very different things. The government shouldn’t have the power to execute people, especially when our justice system doesn’t deliver equal justice. Race, wealth, and access to the best legal representation can determine who lives and who dies.

NEW: The head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement firmly condemning plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan. Archbishop Paul Coakley calls the decision “a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered.” www.usccb.org/news/2026/us...

WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the U.S.
Department of War announced that the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the man convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, would be publicly livestreamed. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement sharply condemning the decision of the U.S. government:
"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War's decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan's actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: 'do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.United States

The FAA recently proposed a rule relaxing its requirements around what items are mandatory in an onboard emergency medical kit (EMK). The rule is not yet final. Here’s why our union opposes this proposed rule.
AFA Opposes Proposed FAA Emergency Medical Kit Rule, Pushes Congressional Mandate

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently proposed relaxing its rules around what items are required in an onboard emergency medical kit (EMK). The FAA’s proposed rule walks back specific item requirements and gives airlines much more discretion in deciding what an EMK should contain.

This is contrary to the direction given by Congress in Sec. 367 and 368 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which calls for experts to “mandate” EMK content. The proposed rulemaking ignores expert recommendations that the FAA itself requested. In October 2024, the FAA convened a working group of medical experts and aviation industry stakeholders (including AFA) to review EMK requirements. The FAA did not follow all of the working group's recommendations.

Our comments to the FAA read in part:

While AFA understands the FAA’s desire to increase operator flexibility in managing the contents of first aid and emergency medical kits, our experience is that this approach undermines safety, creates confusion for medical response teams, and disadvantages carriers who would now carry the burden of determining necessary tools. The rulemaking is not yet final. In addition to expressing concerns through our comments, we also used this as an opportunity to double down on the working group’s recommendations.

We will continue to press the FAA for the tools we need to do our jobs as aviation’s first responders.
