I knew the second I saw that viral clip of the mom and dad at the baseball game that the internet’s insane parasocial contextless gut reaction to it was going to end up being wildly wrong. I really really hate how people just don’t give a shit about being kind or thoughtful anymore on the internet.

PSA: If you have a kid—anywhere from 3 to 10, I think—I cannot recommend this book highly enough. My 3.5yo is obsessed and she probably gets only 10-15% of it. The translation to “kid” is phenomenal, the iambic pentameter is a blast to read aloud, and there are plenty of jokes for the adults, too.

I used to walk past a quote from her every day in one of the most unlikely places — the Office of Naval Intelligence. The quote: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, and become more, you are a leader.” She did and she was. The story of how it got there is kinda surreal.

Judson's Last Ride
COMMENTARY
By Sean Trende
RCP Staff

Today is a day I've dreaded for over a decade. At around 6:20 a.m., we'll get my oldest son Judson up,give him a bath, put his safety harness on (don't worry, we'll dress him first, and then watch him amble down our driveway to the school bus, as we have almost every school day since fourth grade. He'll go through whatever class activities he has, come to the end of the day, and get ready to ride the bus home, as he has almost every school day since fourth grade. His teachers and aides will wipe their eyes, put him on the bus, and off he'll go, just the same as he's done almost every school day since fourth grade.

I used "smooth-brained" as a dig until a father of a boy with lissencephaly -- the medical term for the condition -- wrote me an incredibly patient note to explain what his son had to deal with. This phrase is a gratuitous insult to parents and children who are already suffering. Don't use it.
