Because not for nothing, the only thing that has finally moved any mainstream politicians to start ever so reticently withdraw support from Israel is the fact that people rightly treat genocide as a fucking red line not to be crossed. You have to be willing to kill and die on the fucking hill.

Anyway, I think we could all stand to be just a hair more viciously militant about the equal rights of trans people. I think it'd be good if we did that.

Major western countries, bastions of freedom and human rights, are directly instituting genocidal policy against trans people. The US president is threatening to have them all killed on fucking TV. But hold your tongue and be good and vote for the bigot who doesn't think you're human. For the cause

Nevermind that trans people historically HAVE accepted an infinite parade of indignities to their humanity, with the promise that incremental change would make the world better for them. They've DONE that for longer than I've been alive. And today their reward for that is state-sponsored genocide.

But trans people's participation in sport? Well eeeeh is that REALLY so important? Surely THAT doesn't matter that much! There's so few of them and the other side has much worse policies and urble burble gargle bargle and oooh why can't trans people think of the common good and be reasonable

If someone was trying to pass law criminalizing the participation of cis women in sport, nobody would argue that women should hold their noses and vote for that politician so long as their tax policy was good. We would understand that that is foundationally unacceptable to a free society.

Trans people are constantly asked to treat their full and equal rights as human beings as something LESS than absolute, something LESS than a red line. "Oh sure he's bad on the trans stuff but he's good on other policies!" It is obscene.

Nice to have a citation for the stuff we all sort of assume to be true but question if it's just our own biases making it look that way
Screenshot from the article in the quoted post, saying "Piff and his colleagues found that upper-class drivers were more likely to cut other cars off at junctions and ignore pedestrians at crossings. Wealthier people also appeared more willing to lie at work. In one experiment, volunteers were left alone with a jar of sweets ostensibly meant for children. When the researchers returned, upper-class people had snaffled nearly twice as many candies as lower-class people.

“The general pattern seems to be that with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships,” Piff said. “Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritise one’s own needs over those of others.”

I was on NATIONAL NEWS talking about how bad Flock cameras are. Behind me is my newest creation, a 12' tall puppet named Peter Panopticon. This week is the week of action against ALPRs and we did a demonstration. Watch the story free on YT: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZzf... #FlockOUT
A photo of an anti-Flock protest. People (whose faces have been blurred) gesture angrily at a gigantic puppet that is half man, half Flock camera as he looms overhead. There are protest signs that say things like "FLOCK OUT" and "STOP STALKING US!"A photo of me with pink sunglasses and a black tee shirt. Behind me is the giant puppet, Peter Panopticon. The camera doesn't capture how sweaty I am, but it also didn't capture how my blond mustache is getting so thick these days.

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

"Haunted" #IceOut #IceOutComics
A comic in black/white/blue.
Lucy rolls her bike through an alley, by a crew building a fence.
Narration: My neighbors hired a crew to rebuild their fence.
Crew member: "Do you need us to move our stuff out of the way?"
Lucy: "Oh! No, you're all good, thanks!"
Lucy: "Have a good one!"
Crew member: "You, too!"Narration: I was teaching when my phone started lighting up with alerts from the rapid response network and neighbor chat.
Lucy's back is to us as she shows a group of enthusiastic children something on a notebook. Behind her, her phone in her bag is buzzing.

Narration: By the time the lesson was over, they were already gone.
Lucy is reading messages on her phone.
Messages:
Alert: black SUV
Sighting: be on alert for...
Confirmed abductionL alley between ----- and ----. SUV plates...
We tried to get them inside, but it was too...
...Contacting an I.R. lawyer. Heading to Broadview later today.Lucy is riding her bike home.
Narration: On the ride home, I kept thinking "If I'd been there, could I have warned them? Would my ICIRR* training have helped?"
*Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Get trained and know your rights at ICIRR.org.

Narration: I'd taken the training after Halloween, when the violent ICE raids had locked down our schools and driven our neighbors indoors.

(Image of a halloween bucket in the shape of a jack-o-lantern)

Narration: Halloween is fun here-- The community filling the streets and opening our doors to one another. But this year's was tense, frightened and subdued. Haunted.
Lucy is standing in the alley, staring at the newly built fence.
Narration: When I got home, it was all done. The other two guys who had gotten inside in time stayed and finished the build.

The new fence is superimposed with the brief exchange from earlier in the comic ("Have a good one" You, too")
Narration: I see it every day and think about how those guys built this in the spot where strangers in masks took their friend.

Narration: How many other places in our communities are similarly haunted?
(Drawings of sidewalks, buildings, streets and windows)

A panel from the webcomic Magical Women. Rose and Jane are walking together. Jane, sipping coffee, says, "The sooner we fix the world, the sooner we can rest." A dejected Rose replies, "So in other words, I can sleep when I'm dead."
