New paper in Nature. The more a government controls its domestic media, the more it dominates AI training data, the more pro-regime outputs we get from AI. By scraping the open web, LLMs are unwittingly laundering state-coordinated narratives into seemingly objective answers.

A big share of future historians will conclude that the difference btw US und EU in the 2020s was not in the scale or violence of their respective deportation enforcement regimes but in the scale and ferocity of public opposition to it. On average, Europeans cared far less.

Just imagine the coverage there would be if a ferry or cruise ship had sunk in a storm in the Mediterranean with the loss of a thousand lives and compare it with the attention given to a thousand people in migrant boats drowning in a storm.

Hard agree. Markets are always & everywhere political. The change today is that it is now *visible*, whereas neoliberalism was sold as a fairy tale of everyone winning under the free hand of the market, no politics involved. As Polanyi famously said, "even laissez-faire was planned."

The embassy in Berne sent this letter to the local bakery as well. The response was swift: the bakery sent a letter with a form where the embassy had to declare, that they will not support - amongst other things - the deportation of humans, otherwise they can bake their croissants themselves.
