While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

I really do not get or gel with people who refuse to see authors as competent where everything they do well is incidental and only something the analyst has uncovered. I get wanting to be realistic about what might be "reading too into things" but it's a really rancid attitude to me.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

People who use generative AI as a shortcut or replacement for creative endeavor make me angry. People who’ve convinced themselves its use *is* a creative endeavor make me sad.

I think editors and readers are right to be concerned about genAI, and calling out proven bad actors is generally a good idea. But I don’t think genAI is remotely good enough that we need to worry every story in every magazine is suspect.

Some genAI “writing” may be good enough to trick an editor. Almost none will be good enough to impress them and get published. That won’t stop the people who are tempted to use it, or who are doing so already, but the success rate and rewards are low, while the consequences of being caught are high.

I no longer believe art can save the world, but I believe still that it can save me. So in the face of chaos, misinformation, hatred & ignorance, I'm going to make more art, experience more, share more, pay for more & publish more. I started this in darkness & it'll continue to be my light. 🖤🤍

The genius myth is one of the least useful stories we tell about art. It makes great work look like it arrived by lightning strike instead of years of false starts, bad luck, wrong turns, stubbornness, revision, and private embarrassment. Lightning is prettier. Less true, unfortunately.

They have left us with so few archetypes of the post-menopausal woman as leader, as hero, as sage, as savior, they have positioned menopause as degeneration rather than transformation, and they have left us without language for any of it.

After a mammal is a juvenile, they are an adult. But what are they after they are an adult? In seven species of mammal, including humans, life has a third act for females. We are underreacting to menopause.

The King Bird-of-Paradise is notoriously difficult to find in the wild. These stunning, vividly coloured birds spend most of their lives high in the dense canopies of New Guinea's lowland rainforests.Locating them is an enormous challenge! So beautiful!

Chapter 1 of Moby Dick, page 1

The phrase ‘Call me Ishmael’, the first sentence of the book, is highlighted in blue, with careful highlighting on the very big C at the start. Above this, written in ballpoint pen ‘His name’

This is very real with all of the humanities if you’ve managed to make a career out of them. We are supposed to be so awed and feel so lucky to be there in the first place, ‘chosen’ to do a sacred cultural duty, that we’re meant to accept all manner of sins in order to maintain our presence.
