In general, trainings are a poor substitute for cultural change in an organization. They’re lecturing the people with the least power to abide by values that those with more power don’t hold for themselves.

Not only appealed it, but gave themselves away in doing so! They said it was a topic of public interest. What it was, was a dog whistle. The Press Council has standards to prevent this sort of trash, which need to be invoked and upheld. This was a good decision.

This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.

I’ve researched campus sexual violence in ireland, and this article comes close to something I’ve seen again and again.
Highlighted text reads: We don’t know whether everyone followed their own procedures, let alone whether those procedures were adequate. We don’t know whether anyone made sure the different systems worked together. An alleged gang rape has passed through all of them, and we’re still left asking who’s responsible for the whole bloody mess.

And we wonder why Jane Does don’t report rapes.

This is timely as we’re scattering our beloved dog this weekend 💔 Her ashes don’t amount to much, a small cardboard tube. A handful in our back garden. A handful on a west kerry beach.

Happy Michaelmas! In some parts of Ireland on this day, rent could be paid in geese. If you’re due to pay rent this month, please consider setting a very irritated goose on your landlord in lieu of payment, in the name of upholding important Irish traditions.
A drawing of mine of a goose looking concerned, with a tag around its neck that reads "This month's rent, with thanks".

There was a positive impact in the solidarity and support that some women received from one another, not unlike the much longer tradition of feminist speak outs (Karen Boyle has an excellent book on this). Collective consciousness is good, but testimony =/= justice.

So much of what we think of as 'good' style in persuasive or informative writing asks us to strip out 'hedging' phrases that limit or qualify claims. We want clear, bold theses - they're easier to understand, quicker to read, more exciting, & we take lack of qualifiers as a sign of authority.

Britain’s original plan for New Zealand had the islands split into three provinces, with nonsensical borders typical of any British colonial project. The provinces were named after Irish ones (the guy who came up with them was an Anglo-Irish colonial officer). These didn’t last for long.
A map of New Zealand, showing its provincial divisions in 1841. Most of the North Island forms ‘New Ulster’, but the southern tip of the island forms ‘New Munster along with what today is now known as the Southern Island. The small island below the Southern Island, Rakiura/Stewart Island, makes the third province ‘New Leinster’

Remarkably short list given it’s global. I only spotted 2 affiliated with Irish unis - there’s a couple of noteworthy absences (to my knowledge) who may just be yet-to-sign. On the whole it makes for a pretty good avoid-at-all-costs list. I guess I’ve signed letters that make these people avoid me…

Yeah totally agree. It’s amazing how hard people find it to hold those two things at once. This soured Naomi klein’s much-recommended doppelganger for me; she was so insistent that Covid restrictions were about solidarity, and so uninterested in what else was going on…

These are essential conversations, and difficult to have. When people say they have been abused, believe them. I didn’t follow the frames, but I knew enough predatory musicians (and enough non-predatory ones) to know this story. Ignoring it won’t help, nor will sensationalising it. We must listen.

Many people struggling this week with the perennial problem of a famous artist who was also a known groomer, warned about among young women. The fact that our lives are bound up with those of abusers is hard to deal with. We have been here before, we are never not here. Some writing has helped me:
