The truly spectacular Martelli Annunciation from the church of San Lorenzo. This one is so good -- Mary's gesture, the pure flask of water in its special little niche, the back-up angels, the arches and the space. Wow, Filippo Lippi, A+.

At Deerhurst, a kitchen in the nave and a bedroom in the chancel concealed an Anglo-Saxon chapel built in 1056 by a kinsman of Edward the Confessor. Rediscovered in 1865, it had survived hidden in plain sight - a thousand-year thread absorbed into an ordinary home.

The folding fan (mai-ogi) serves as a primary prop in traditional Japanese dance (nihon-buyō), used dynamically to represent everything from falling cherry blossoms and flowing water to hidden emotions through stylized physical gesture.

Partially shrouded behind a widely unfurled folding fan (mai-ogi), a geisha looks outward with a quiet, arresting gaze, her hand grasping the fan's bamboo ribs with practiced grace. Captured in high-contrast monochrome, her porcelain-white oshiroi makeup and dark, defined eyes create a striking focal point against the deep black of her traditional hair. Resting atop her swept-back hairstyle is an intricate silver-wire kanzashi shaped into a delicate butterfly, its woven filigree catching the light above her crisp white collar (eri) and dark kimono. The photograph radiates an enchanting sensory atmosphere: the soft whisper of air stirred by the opening fan, the faint, dry scent of traditional cosmetics and rice powder, the subtle metallic clink of hair ornaments moving with her posture, and the poised, expectant silence that precedes a classical dance performance.

This evocative portrait celebrates the living artistic heritage of Japan's flower and willow world (karyūkai), where geisha and maiko embody centuries of refined performing arts, music, and traditional fashion. The folding fan (mai-ogi) serves as a primary prop in traditional Japanese dance (nihon-buyō), used dynamically to represent everything from falling cherry blossoms and flowing water to hidden emotions through stylized physical gesture. The subject's striking butterfly kanzashi showcases the specialized artisan craft of Japanese metal filigree and fine hair decoration, while her meticulously applied makeup and layered collar reflect the rigorous standards of classical training.

A close-up photograph of a weathered stone monument standing in a lush, ivy-covered garden. The monument features a small metal relief of a person at the top, with a staircase-like design beneath it and the German inscription “SO NAH UND DOCH SO FERN” engraved on the front. Green foliage surrounds the monument, creating a peaceful and slightly melancholic atmosphere.

By contemporary artist Yu Miyazaki, this evocative portrait demonstrates a masterful continuation of Japanese figurative painting (bijin-ga)

Framed within a curtain of cascading lavender wisteria (fuji) blossoms, a young woman gazes downward in quiet, introspective contemplation. Her alabaster skin, subtly flushed with delicate rose tones around the eyelids and lips, is gently cradled by long, slender fingers held near her face. Strands of fine, dark hair flow across her shoulders, partially draped in delicate white lace trim while pale purple petals cluster softly against her forehead and cheeks. The portrait evokes an exquisitely fragile sensory atmosphere: the sweet, lingering perfume of spring wisteria suspended in still air, the soft touch of cool petals brushing against warm skin, the gentle rustle of delicate lace, and the breathless, intimate hush of a private, unspoken moment. Created by contemporary artist Yu Miyazaki, this evocative portrait demonstrates a masterful continuation of Japanese figurative painting (bijin-ga), bridging traditional sensibilities with modern psychological nuance. Wisteria has long held a cherished place in Japanese literature and visual culture, celebrated since the Heian period in classical waka poetry and kabuki theater as an emblem of refined elegance, tender longing, and quiet devotion. Miyazaki’s meticulous paint application reflects the core spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material reverence), layering fine mineral pigments and translucent glazes to achieve the luminous depth of the subject's complexion alongside the intricate, individual threads of her dark hair and woven lace.
