Nine hours today in A&E with our ancient relative. Care in Majors was excellent - busy but civilised. Step outside into the rest of A&E and it looked like carnage. They closed our local A&E, which means everyone from our London Borough has to travel a neighbouring one. Too many people.

“Can I do it?” is a terrible measure of disability. Yes, I can do it. Can I do it repeatedly? Can I do it safely? Can I do it without support? Can I do anything afterwards? Can I do it tomorrow too? What does doing it COST? These tell me a lot more about my capability.

My hairdresser is emigrating. I am not great at being touched by people I don’t know. I find salons overwhelming, not helped by having to remove my hearing aids and glasses. I have curly hair (if you know, you know). REALLY not the end of the world but..!

Autism is genetic
Our charity has stated definitively, for the first time, that autism is genetic, after a robust and comprehensive review of high-quality research into this subject.

Ancient relative has moved to a higher needs nursing room. The staff have been marvellous. The caretaker even took a photo of his pictures so they could be moved and put up in the same arrangement, in the new room. Proper care.

If you know a young person starting out in the world of work, please badger them to join a union. There is strength in numbers and workplaces can be tricky to navigate, particularly when there is neurodivergence in the mix.

Badly supervised children (3 and 5 ish) in the cafe. 5 spots my leg. ‘Look at her poorly leg.’ I explain that it’s a brace and it’s getting better. They return to their grandparents and point. They run back. 5: ‘What happened?’ Grandma yells from a distance, ‘they’re interested in your leg.’ Hmmm.

This is shameful discriminatory and misogynistic reporting. People aren’t choosing disability to be “cool”. Young women don’t have to “prove” to you that they’re sick. Disability rates are skyrocketing because we’ve left a disabling virus rip through the population for over 6 years.

Being clear, as ever, my aims in querying research are to get research improved, ethical, focused on outcomes asked for by autistic people in the cohorts being 'fixed', & properly considering adverse effects & harms. I'd like a good quality of life for everyone, as an aim. Not enforced normalisation

Morning! A little early morning gaslighting for me. Tip of the day: if someone with a hidden disability messages you to say they are too sore to do something, best not to counter with, ‘well, I’m a bit sore because…but I’m still going.’ Onwards and upwards, eh?! #hEDS

Why is it that every time I have to describe something medical, people don't believe it till a doctor signs off on it. Imagine if they were like that about cars.. "I couldn't get my car started this morning" "Did a mechanic actually say it wouldn't start, or is it just you thinking that?" #NEISvoid

All this ‘chatter’ about the cost of ADHD and autism diagnosis to the NHS is missing the point. Systems (like education) are not designed to work for neurodivergent folk. Support is virtually impossible to get without a diagnosis. Of course people seek one - it’s often needed just to survive.

If I’m sitting alone in an outdoor hot tub at the gym without anyone else in sight, and you join me, I do not want to have a conversation. Your repeated attempts will be met with polite, but brief responses, until you eventually give up. Particularly, if you are a lone male with badly broken teeth.

Over these last years the UK has become outright hostile to neurodivergent & disabled people. We are going backwards. I've never seen such a negative news focus on ADHD, Autism and Disability. It's making people withdraw from life. Repercussions are getting vast, so experts need start pushing back.

Lots of talk on ADHD, Autism on support, diagnosis, medication floating around. Few thoughts 1. You know we get misdiagnosed for years, prescribed far more dangerous medication with little oversight, treated in wards for years for things we don't have. Diagnosis and treatment is cheaper.

Ableism, Racism, Sexism, Anti Trans, Homophobia, Xenophobia, Classism. They all rely on the same fundamental mechanism... deciding some human lives inherently hold less value than others. It's the same fight, against the same system. Solidarity isn't optional when the system is identical.

Reform and proposed disability changes .. The theory of othering in plain sight. Othering strips people of their full humanity, making it easier for societies to practice exclusion, prejudice, and institutional discrimination. Stigmatising the disabled and marginalised them still further.
