#Mathstoday My year 11s had a go at this lovely Dr Austin task today - Recognising graphs. They not been exposed loads to cubic of reciprocal graphs so did find it hard at time but most of them got there in the end.

A sequence of tasks leading up to finding the HCF of two numbers from their prime factorisations. Lots of work on finding factors given a prime factorisation before looking for common factors of two numbers. I chose not to use Venn diagrams and allowed the students to reason their way through it.

I hope, at some point, to talk in depth about the current state of AI in aiding maths teaching/learning. But searching through past papers from other specifications to find suitable exam questions used to take me many hours, and AI has made that considerably quicker and more efficient.

#Mathstoday First time using Ai today to help get questions (I'm reasonably anti Ai) Gave the Ai 7 questions of what I was looking for and it did manage to create some ok stuff. Couldn't find questions on the topic from actual humans (which I would have preferred)

#MathsToday we were discussing careers today? Do you do anything with KS5 that links to careers especially linking to specific topics? Good sites for videos etc. I know there's the maths careers website but I'm interested in what you do as a department to share the ideas. Thanks

More IMC problems today. This time without presenting the multiple choice responses, and two similar problems which allowed weaker students to have something to base their ideas on. It was much more productive. #mathstoday

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some averages with fractions: interwovenmaths.com/averages-wit... This was one of the original Interwoven Maths tasks when the site launched, and I still love the different fraction skills it requires, e.g. finding the midpoint of two fractions in the third column.

Now I am no longer preparing students for GCSEs in Year 10/11, working in the French system, I find it so liberating writing assessments. No need to use past paper questions and I can develop interesting tasks which will really allow me to assess the student mathematically. Like this one.

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog about following up worked examples by asking "What would happen to the answer if I changed the question slightly?" Here's another example of this from the blog. wp.me/p9t8DE-s8 #Mathschat #MTBoS #iTeachMaths #Maths
Initial question:

Find the mean, median, mode and range for the dataset:

12, 13, 14, 17, 17, 19, 20

Answers:
mean = 16,      median = 17,      mode = 17,      range = 8

What would happen if I changed the question?
What would happen if we increased the last number by 1 (20 to 21)?
Which summary statistics would change? Why?
Which summary statistics would stay the same? Why?

#Mathstoday Used this NCETM task today for finding the area of triangles. Students have to measure the base and height. The original sheet doesn't have the heights drawn on but for my group they needed that scaffolding. They need a bit more time in the next lesson but I'm happy how it went.

In #MathsToday, Year 8 have started a chapter on Ratio and Proportion. Certainly a contender for one of my favourite topics to teach. And it is one with a lot of particularly lovely NCETM Checkpoints to choose from - these are two highlights for me. www.ncetm.org.uk/classroom-re...
Checkpoint 19: Dough. Chapati dough uses 2 cups of flour for every 1 cup of water; pizza dough uses 3 cups of flour for every 2 cups of water. Six bowls contain: a) 9 cups flour, 6 cups water; b) 12 cups flour, 8 cups water; c) 12 cups flour, 6 cups water; d) 18 cups flour, 12 cups water; e) 24 cups flour, 12 cups water; f) 24 cups flour, 18 cups water. Students decide whether each is chapati dough, pizza dough or neither, then consider what could be added to change each dough into the other kind.Checkpoint 20: Imperfect meringues. A perfect meringue uses 150 g sugar for every 3 eggs. Five mixtures contain: a) 200 g sugar and 6 eggs; b) 450 g sugar and 7 eggs; c) 400 g sugar and 9 eggs; d) 500 g sugar and 9 eggs; e) 500 g sugar and 10 eggs. Students determine what must be added to make each mixture perfect, then consider other possible combinations, including whether a perfect meringue could use 20 eggs or 20 g sugar.

In #MathsToday we were rearranging where factorising is required. I like how the first three are relatively easy, but our answer to "make c the subject" gives us an insight into how we might rearrange for x.
A slide with the formula ax = bx + c and four prompts to rearrange in terms of a, b, c and finally x.

In #MathsToday (yesterday) my #MHF4U students were having trouble determining the leading coefficient of a polynomial in factored form so I gave them this series to do in random groups at the whiteboards. It was quick and worked really well.
A series of equations of polynomials from a quadratic in standard form to a degree 6 polynomial in factored form: y = 0.5(5-x)(x-1)^2(2x+8)^3 where one thing is changed at a time to make each one a little more challenging than the previous one
