In #mathstoday, I’ve been playing around with using Numicon to represent the structure of different sequences visually for my Year 7 students.

In #mathstoday - another directed number lesson with my Y7s. Trickiest so far - subtracting negatives from positives with the counters. Here’s my worksheet. Tried to choose the calculations in Q1 so they scaffolded the counter use for the next calculation or two. Any feedback welcome 😁

In #ALevelMaths today, my Year 13s gave this parametric equations problem from Underground Maths a go. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they got on with it. Lots of great discussions 😁 undergroundmathematics.org/chain-rule/p...

In #mathstoday, this activity proved pretty effective in checking students’ understanding of zero pairs before we moved onto adding directed number. It was so easy to get feedback on what everyone answered with the 👍🏼👎🏼 If you think of another statement I could add in, let me know 😁

In #mathstoday (well, this week) I’ve started teaching directed number with double-sided counters to my Year 7s. We spent the whole lesson focussing on understanding zero pairs. This worksheet worked pretty well but I’m sure it can be improved. Any suggestions for different questions I could add in?

Currently auditing what we do for #alevelmaths transition, from Y11 to Y12, at my school. I’m curious to hear what other schools do. Do you run an induction lesson? If so, what maths do you do in that induction lesson? What transition work do you set?

Spending some of my gained time improving what we do in Maths around careers. Came across these lovely resources. Says it aimed at primary but I think they’re still nice to use with KS3 nustem.uk/stem-person-...

In #mathstoday I rolled out this classic SMILE activity in my Year 7 Maths lesson. Worked really well, although it never ceases to amaze me how slow some kids are at cutting out ✂️ 😴

In #mathstoday (well, actually yesterday) my Year 12s tackled another great Underground Maths problem. This one worked really well & stimulated loads of discussion, helping cement their understanding of logs. Definitely recommend 👍🏼 undergroundmathematics.org/exp-and-log/...

In #mathstoday, I’ve tried something new when marking #coremaths mocks. To try & reduce the “where did I lose marks?” questions on the big Paper 1 mock questions, I’m trialling a sticker detailing what is needed for each mark, which I can tick as I go. Made estimation & tax/NI marking much easier 😁

Core Maths teachers - I’m looking at misleading diagrams/charts with my class on Friday. Anyone got any ‘great’ ones I can share with them? I’m going to use this classic but on the look out for a few more crackers @ecrmaths.bsky.social @davegjones.bsky.social @coremathscat.bsky.social

Matt is such a great ambassador for the GLOW Maths Hub. We’re so lucky to have him as an LLME. If you’re Teaching A Level Maths in Gloucs/Worcs, make sure you sign up for his Developing A Level Pedagogy work group.

Started the binomial expansion today with Year 12. Introduced it a different way to normal and it actually worked really well 😁 also started randomly assigning partners at the start of each lesson using playing cards - definitely recommend this for collaboration outside of friendship groups ♥️♠️♦️♣️

Need some help from #coremaths peeps - trying to create bar models for tax & NI from the 2025 Paper 1 Prelim. Thoughts? Does it work? NI seems to but tax is messy. Not sure how to make the £100,000-£125,140 one any better. All feedback welcome! @reflectivemaths.bsky.social @ecrmaths.bsky.social

In #mathstoday there was much excitement from my Y7s when I told them the starter was a hidoku puzzle from @mathequalslove.bsky.social. Today’s was obviously Pi themed 🥧 😁

While the small people are occupied in the soft play, it’s time to get to grips with next week’s @ncetm.bsky.social subject knowledge session for non-specialists. We’re hitting algebra 🥳 I ❤️ this programme and the confidence it helps our so, so valuable non-specialists develop #mathscpd

Slightly late but in #mathstoday (on Friday) I used double sided counters to introduce adding negatives to my Y7s and it was amazing. They loved it, I loved it. Never teaching directed number without them again. 🔴🟡
