A sequences begins: 4, 6, 10, 16, ... Is it a quadratic or Fibonacci style sequence? Is it possible to be given five (or more) terms of a sequence and still be undecided?

#Mathstoday Year 8 have started looking at estimation today. They have 10 seconds to give a good estimation of this on their whiteboard. Made via Mathsbot

#Mathatoday Year 9 practiced their division today, after realising they were really quite weak instead of moving on we practiced with these. Students cover the question with the answers (I have an answer sheet) and it's quite easy to check.

Absolutely shattered. Super fun Yr7 trip today. Got to go rock climbing and do Archery. The only maths today was scoring for the archery (well apart from all the planning I'm now doing)

#Mathstoday One of the things I find is in the lesson students can factorise. As soon as you mix up the questions they can't do it. Got my Yr10 to have a go at these and it was unsurprisingly how much slower they were.

An Old Akkadian school text problem; only 4000 years old. I think they were interested in how to partition non-rectangular fields for inheritance purposes ... so for 2 brothers say, in the case of this problem. #UKMathsChat #iTeachMath
Old Akkadian school text IM 58045 showing a trapezium partitioned into two equal areas. The parallel sides of the trapezium are 17 and 7 units and the perpendicular distance between these sides is 12 units. The partition is made parallel to the sides of 17 and 7 units. Find the length of the partition line and its distance from the side of 17 units.

#Mathstoday 2/4 lessons were tests today. Yr10 had a go at some quite complicated factorising single brackets If anyone has some nice factorising problems I'd love to have them. They are a very strong group.

#Mathstoday Yr11 had a go at the mix volume and surface area of prisms sheet from Dr Austin. So many times the student was stuck just because they didn't read the question and was trying to find the surface area on a volume question. www.draustinmaths.com/_files/ugd/7...

I was reminded of this task by @morrismaths359.bsky.social earlier this week. It's one of my favourites, so I've recorded a quick video to demonstrate how you can model a solution using prime factor tiles. Video in the next post...but first here's the task.
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Fill the blanks with the numbers above to make the calculation correct. One number is not used.

__ × __ × __ × __ = __ × __ × __ × __

#Mathstoday Year 8 really surprised me with how good they were at equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions today. Absolutely wizzed through it. Onto adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators next. (With mixed numbers too!)

#Mathstoday Year 10 looked at Surface Area today. Made them all draw the faces to make sure they include them all. Tried a harder question at the end, it seems like they do need a bit more practice on applying the skills.

I've had these posters in 3 different classrooms across 2 different schools over 4 years. This year 3 have been damaged.... They have the glossy finish otherwise I'd just print out new ones. Such a shame, hopefully they last until we get our new maths building (hopefully in a year)

#Mathstoday Year 10 are solving quadratics using factorising, (coefficient of X^2 = 1) decided since my year 11 group really struggled with sketching quadratics we would start right there on sketching them (and making sure they are symmetrical! Not minimum point always on y axis!)

The thing I feel most strongly about setting is that if you’re setting, you should put strong teachers on your lowest-attaining sets. Unfortunately in my current role, I see trainees/ECTs are still being given loads of bottom sets 😔 #MathsToday
