In #mathstoday yr 2 #Alevelmaths did @jamiewoodmaths.bsky.social’s order of transformations walk through, yr 1 looked at simultaneous equations and quadratic inequalities including @mathsjem.bsky.social’s spot the mistake. Grateful for teachers creating and sharing great resources. (Links below)

In #mathstoday #Alevelmaths yr 1 did hidden quadratics and filled in the blanks with this resource from Swinton maths, yr 2 found intersections of modulus graphs mostly adapting examples taken from the dr frost slides - my new A3 MWBs, fine tip pens and board rubbers got lots of use 😀

#AlevelMaths - any recommendations on resources or tips for teaching modulus equations? Must admit I’m a little rusty and want to make sure I am clear. Any advice other than always sketch the graph or if squaring check the solutions in original equation?

In #MathsToday Yr 1 #AlevelMaths proved the quadratic formula using an underground maths card sort, did some explorative work on key features of quadratic functions using factorised form and completing the square and then completed DrAustin finding quadratic equations from their graphs. Links below

In #MathsToday Yr 2 #AlevelMaths explored modulus functions using this MEI desmos activity. Some good discussions were had and they surprised themselves with how much they could work out. When the lesson ended and they hadn’t quite finished a student told me it was fun and he didn’t want to stop 😀

This inspired me to make something with claude about transformations of the form f(ax+b) Have a play with it here: jammyix.github.io/orderoftrans... (well aware there are many similar versions of this about online with desmos etc, but wanted to see what claude could do)

Following on from some recent discussions on here and as I am teaching it next week, please tell me what are your favourite desmos (or similar) activities for teaching combinations of transformations? #Alevelmaths

In #mathstoday yr 1 #alevelmaths did so well with Ab-surd! from underground maths. Didn’t really feel like I had to teach them much, they worked it all out themselves through some great discussions. Yr 2 did some textbook practice on functions, a simple lesson, but very much needed for this group.

In #mathstoday worked on non calculator skills with my higher gcse resitters, rapidly concluding that the mixed ability nature of this group will be the biggest challenge this year, really need to rethink my approach 🤔

In #mathstoday gcse higher resit did all things multiples, factors and prime factorisation, making use of the mathspad interactive tool for factor trees, lots of good discussion about factor pairs vs trees and how we can make sure we don’t miss any factors.

Yesterday but in #mathstoday yr 2 struggled with inverse functions, graph sketching skills need some work and they struggled to discover the reflection in y=x when sketching by hand. I’ll try desmos next time. Any recommendations on good resources for a quick recap of yr 1 graph sketching?

In #MathsToday, Yr 2 #AlevelMaths had a go at Compose! from Underground Maths. Yr 1 started proof, with the challenge of producing a convincing argument without using algebra, before moving on to more formal proof by deduction.

In #mathstoday yr 2 #Alevelmaths did this domain and range card sort from MEI, lots of opportunity to fill in some gaps in their graph sketching and transformation skills before we moved onto composite functions.

Worked at a school where a member of staff had a 0.6 contract over 5 days a week. She didnt teach first or last period so she could do the school run. Do not understand why more schools don't accommodate childcare for members of staff, especially if they're very good

A reminder that a grade 4 is a standard pass. That doesn't mean grades 1-3 are fails. A fail is less than grade 1. There are students who will be over the moon with a grade 1-3, so let's be mindful of that in the language we use on Thursday. If someone can get the media on board too, even better 😆

I don’t know much about life. But if I can offer one piece of advice about raising boys it’s this… Don’t chase them. If you need them for something, sit down as if you’re about to enjoy a nice drink. They will find you. If you want some peace, ask them if they want to help you with a job. Gone.

In #mathstoday using gained time to start thinking about #Alevelmaths yr 1 summer work - do you do this and if so what? I was wondering about something on the large dataset but maybe that’s best done closer to exams? Or some yr 1 consolidation? Open to ideas!

#AlevelMaths another silly marking question from me. If mark scheme says “must see a correct expression with all powers of evaluated prior to obtaining 9/4” then is this full marks with crossed out line missed or do they need to include that line. Question says fully justify answer. (This is AQA)

Can someone explain to me expectations on the appropriate degree of accuracy in force and motion qs? Is it that if they use g=10 then answers should be to 1 s.f and g=9.8 then to 2 s.f, is this expected even if question doesn’t say to give to appropriate degree of accuracy? We do AQA #AlevelMaths
