The marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) looks like a ferret dressing up as a cheetah for Halloween. They're native to a semi-desert grassland strip from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. Like a skunk, they can spray a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands. Let's talk about them. (📷: Petra Prager)
A marbled polecat photo from Petra Prager. It looks almost exactly like a ferret, but the arched back is sort of orange with brown dots on it similar to a cheetah, and the head has a white stripe that reminds me of a skunk, with a long floofy tail and dark limbs. This one looks alert and at rest.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

This is what the latest research shows would happen for an average family if we moved to #MedicareForAll instead of a profit-driven, privatized health care system. WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
Threads post by @marks_wells_rector. Text reads:
"The new Yale Medicare-for-All study is bigger news than it's getting.
An average insured family of 4 pays about $10k/year today.
With M4A they will pay nothing unless they have income above $200K.
Above $200K: 6% only on income OVER $200K.
No premiums. No deductibles. No copays.
For most Americans, Medicare for All isn't a tax increase. It's a massive healthcare cost cut."

Synnove relaxing with the carbuncle family 🩵 Galette, 💛 Tyr, ❤️ Ivar, 🖤 Amandina, 🤍 Roksana, and 💙 Ipomoea! Commission for DT #ffxiv
Digital full body illustration of a Final Fantasy 14 hyur woman lying in the grass with six carbuncles around her, smiling sweetly at one of them running around. The lady herself has brown skin, green eyes, and a high pony tail of dark brown hair with a green ombre. She wears a black corset over a deep green open shoulder ruffle blouse, black fingerless gloves, short frayed grey jean shorts, and long black thigh boots. There is a very small black pearl carbuncle lying on her stomach being stroked, a medium ruby carbuncle running around joyfully next to her, a medium size sapphire carbuncle loafing under her legs watching him, a small emerald carbuncle sat over her shoulder also watching him, an absolutely huge topaz carbuncle lying next to her fast asleep, and a tiny white pearl carbuncle poised ontop of his back, ready to pounce forwards at the ruby lad. They are in a soft relaxing grassy place with little white flowers all around, leafy trees above them, and gentle rays of light shining through creating warm dapples across them.

Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...
So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

What do you think when you hear that?

The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter?

That’s my question for you.

Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does.

But there must be some set of skills that matter.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those.

There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address. And I ——

I don’t really believe that to be true.

It’s completely true. Janine will tell you and Lori will tell you.

One day I had to pump gas — it was a few years ago. They needed my ZIP code, and I panicked. I didn’t know my ZIP code. I don’t know my telephone number. I forget these things. I can live with it.

But let me take the other side because I don’t want to fall into a thing where, because some skills can be safely offloaded ——

Yeah.

I also can’t get anywhere without a mapping system now. Never could, frankly. But I’m a big reader. And one of the skills I really value, one of the capacities I have that I really value is an attention span formed on physical books.

You’re a big reader. I’ve read about the kind of reading you do. And there is, prior to A.I., a lot of concern and noticing among college professors and others that the way people use the internet has probably shortened attention spans.
Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off. Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off.

Yeah. Well, I think that we’re going to lose some finer intellectual dexterity, but we’re going to be better systems thinkers.

Today’s engineers are far better systems thinkers than I was when I graduated from school. But I was a much better transistor thinker.

What do you mean by systems thinker?

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.

My coauthor Barrett Tylor, who is not on here, was interviewed by The New Yorker about the partisan takeover of Texas Tech and our "postliberal university" concept is used to explain what's going on in US higher education! www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
During Donald rump's second term, state legislatures across the country hav deemed "woke ideology." More than half of American college students, in twenty- three states, are currently attending a school that has been forced to ban certain topics from the classroom, eliminate academic departments, or drastically weaken tenure protections for professors. Barrett Taylor, a scholar of higher education at the University of North Texas, described such measures as the first phase of a wider
movement to establish what he calls the "post-liberal university." The second phase involves installing political appointees to run universities. In 2022, only three per cent of college presidents came from the public sector. But in Florida a quarter of state schools are now led by former Republican politicians, and many other states, including Ohio, Virginia, and Texas, have increasingly turned to conservative lawmakers to run public colleges and universities in the past two years. As a former trustee at a Florida public college put it, "We are now over the walls and ready to
transform higher education from within."

OK. I mentioned this before, won't belabor it, but this paragraph is art. I would wager a not-inconsiderable sum that Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, Augustine, and Lon Chaney have never been cited in a single paragraph before. (And hopefully never will again.)
Plaintiff has sued Wizards for $10M because he believes he created and exclusively owns the
idea for a “wereshark” and that Wizards has infringed upon his creation. By way of relevant
background, lycanthropic monsters – werewolves and the like – have been found in folklore and
fiction since antiquity. Hundreds of years before the Common Era, Herodotus wrote of the Neuri, a
tribe northeast of Scythia that would reportedly transform into wolves for several days once a year.
Herodotus, The Histories, 4.105 (circa 440 BCE). Werewolves continued to appear in folklore from
antiquity through modern times, and across a wide range of cultures. See, e.g., Pausanias, Description of
Greece, 8.2 (circa 160-180 CE); Ovid, The Metamorphoses, I 219-239 (circa 8 CE); Pliny the Elder,
Natural History, VIII.34 (circa 77 CE); Augustine, The City of God, XVIII.17 (circa 426 CE); King
Canute, Ecclesiastical Ordinances, c. 26 (circa 1020 CE); Anonymous, The Tale of Igor’s Campaign (circa
late 1100s) (Slavic folklore); Marie de France, Bisclavret (circa 1200); Völsungasaga, ch. 8 (circa 1250
CE) (Nordic folklore). Bram Stoker depicted Dracula as a werewolf in Dracula’s Guest. Werewolves
1 Plaintiff Lap-Sun Chan named “Dungeons and Dragons Wizards of the Coast LLC” as the Defendant, but Dungeons
and Dragons is a game published and owned by Wizards of the Coast, LLC, not a distinct entity.
2 See Chan v. Ramdhaney, Case No. 1:22-cv-03708 (S.D.N.Y 2022) 3 See Eng v. Podolnick, No. 1:14-cv-04675 (S.D.N.Y 2014) (dismissed for failure to comply with order requiring Plaintiff to
“file an amended complaint not containing the stricken portions or any other racist, anti-Semitic, or insulting language”).came to the silver screen first in Werewolf of London (1935) and then Lon Chaney’s definitive
performance in The Wolf Man (1941), and have essentially never left it since. And animal
shapeshifting has not been limited to wolves. Greek mythology is replete with humans (or humanshaped gods) who transform into animals or monsters. In Tlingit folklore, Kóoshdaa are wereotters. Celtic mythology includes selkies (were-seals) and kelpies (shape-shifting water-horses that
live in lochs). DC Comics has featured numerous shark-human hybrids since its Silver Age,
including Guppy (a small-time criminal in Nightwing’s rogues’ gallery, first appearance in 2018),
King Shark (the son of a shark god and a human mother, first appearance in 1994), and Karshon (a
mutated shark, first appearance in Green Lantern 24, October 1963). Other examples abound.
