A few thoughts on Russia's war against Ukraine: 1. Trump does whatever he can to support Putin. His problem is that most republicans support Ukraine, so he gives them an opportunity to cheat themselves to claim that Trump supports Ukraine. /1

As early as February 24, 2022, I said in many TV shows & essays that we, the Allies, must intervene directly against russia. I have often repeated since then that we can't win #OurWar without participating in it. I reiterate this now. Taking no risks will lead us straight to defeat. #LeaderlessWorld

What the Trump administration are proposing to do, however they spin it, is to side with Russia against Ukraine, against European security. 10 years of Trump's pro-Russia views and 4 months of no actual attempt to end the war by coercing Russia mean it shouldn't be a shock, but clearly it will be.

Final thing: the White House are framing this as walking away from the war, a framing that's being repeated by the media. It's incorrect. If they move to normalise relations, lift sanctions, and create new economic ties to Russia, that's siding with Russia, not walking away.

The framing of this otherwise good @nytimes article is frustrating. It's *always* been clear, since before his re-election, that Trump wouldn't impose new sanctions or use any other coercive instrument against Russia. He hasn't "backed off"; he was never on board. 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/20/u...

At some point, hopefully soon, European leaders must accept that Trump won't help them to help Ukraine or pressurise Russia. Europe still has leverage over RU. It should start by transferring immobilised RU assets to UA to fund war & reconstruction. And it shd step up sanctions enforcement.

“Not one sanction’s been lifted on the Russians. Every single sanction that was in place under the previous administration remains in place.” Rubio makes it sound as if it’s a decision the administration have taken; in fact, Congress acted to block Trump lifting sanctions in 2017.

Predictably, Trump seems rather more certain about Ukraine and Russia now engaging in immediate negotiations with a focus on a ceasefire than Putin is. But as always with Trump, the focus is on the US-Russia relationship, particularly on economic relations, not on the war.

Why Europe Must Avoid a Strategic Trap in a Post-American World
