So bleak
Two-thirds of universities told the survey they were considering alliances or mergers, while 31 per cent were cutting academic research, up from 14 per cent in 2024. This includes reducing funding for PhD and young researchers, as well as giving academics less time for their own projects.
The survey also found 44 per cent of respondents were cutting courses, up from 24 per cent in 2024, with programmes in modern languages, English literature, history and chemistry badly hit.
The Department for Education said it had
"already taken action to put universities on a firmer financial footing".
"We expect universities to take appropriate decisions to ensure their long-term
sustainability, which could be merging with another institution and more collaboration in the sector, it added

These things are mutually exclusive. You can only mitigate the social, environmental and economic impact of AI by rejecting it. There is no 'ethical use'. The Society of Authors has betrayed all of its members and all human authors everywhere.

As more people got access to degrees gradually they weren’t seen as worth as much… fast forward to today where we’re being told machines can & should do our thinking & our work. The oligarchs saying this are descendants (in some cases literally) of the people who tried to keep most of us uneducated.

'What’s missing from much of the discussion is the sacrosanct get out of jail free card of academic judgement. And assuming universities aren’t keen to inadvertently trade away their right to deny an appeal on that basis, it needs to be front and centre.' Finally someone gets the essential point.

AI marking could cost universities their get out of jail free card
Set aside for a second the fact that when you ask students if academics should be able to use AI in marking, they tend to be vehemently opposed.
