Why does one of the Royal Society's portraits of Isaac Newton contain a depiction of a snake eating its own tail, a symbol with alchemical connotations known as the ouroboros? Ainsley Vinall looks closer on our blog: royalsociety.org/blog/2026/07/snake…
A painted portrait of a man in 18th century clothing. He has a large wig, robes, and his hand rests on a book. Barely visible in the background is the symbol of a snake eating its own tail.

Last week, we co-hosted the annual 'History and Archives in Practice' conference, with partners @ihr.bsky.social, The National Archives and @unisheffieldlib.bsky.social. This year's theme was ‘Shaping Societies, Improving Lives'. More about #HAP26 and the projects showcased here: bit.ly/48j0Dhj
Opening page of Royal Historical Society blog: 'Shaping societies, improving lives: History and Archives in Practice 2026.'

Full text of abstract: "On Thursday 16 April 2026, the Royal Historical Society co-hosted the annual ‘History and Archives in Practice’ conference. This year’s conference organised around the theme: ‘Shaping Societies, Improving Lives: the Impact of Archives and Historical Research.’ A partnership of The National Archives, Royal Historical Society, and the Institute of Historical Research, ‘History and Archives in Practice’ (HAP) is where historians and archivists come together to consider shared interests in archive collections, their interpretation and use. Every other year we endeavour to partner with a UK archive or institution which similarly specialises in the bringing together of archivists and researchers. For History and Archives in Practice 2026, we were delighted to partner with the University of Sheffield Library and members of their Special Collections, Heritage and Archives team."
