An example of a fishing technique from Sweden in the early 20th century. Fishermen deploying a handheld stake or drift net into a small river, effectively blocking all fish, is ecologically damaging. Described in secondary literature as an illegal fishing method. #coastalhistory #muSEAum

Stone fish weirs on the coast at Chaffinch Island, Connecticut, USA believed to be made by the #indigenouspeoples. L-shaped weir cutting into a shallow bay & forming an enclosure 200m long. The wall is made up of several layers of stone set into the mud of the intertidal zone.1/3 #coastalhistory

Rapa Nui/Easter Island is home to 1000s of petroglyphs. Usually, carvings are found in smooth areas of lava flow (called "papa" in Rapanui) & basalt. Most of these surfaces occur along coastal areas and often are associated with major ceremonial centres, showing fish and sea birds. #coastalhistory

The coastal waters of Cape Verde have a range of ecological niches, diverse seabed bathymetry, onshore reefs, sandy shorelines, and a deep-water offshore fishery. Coral reef fish & deep-water fishery benefit from the upwelling of nutrient-rich waters and a rich ecological system. #coastalhistrory

"The street" seabed boulevard of #whitstable. The Street is a raised spit of flints and gravels set in shelly sand on a hard band of London Clay, half mile. Used daily as a walking path at low tide. A site known for Roman pottery & shipping till the 20th century. #Coastsinmind

Tackling fishing tackle! An early example: a centre-pin fishing reel in the Ma Yuan (c. 1160–1225), a renowned #Chinese landscape painter of the #SongDynasty, "Fishing Alone on the Cold River" in the Southern Song Dynasty, dating 1195 AD. Became common in Europe in the 17th century.

Hokkei seems to have taken a liking to this ritual, as he depicted it in other works as well. Note that in this particular painting, he uses the name "Aoigaoka" rather than "Totoya (Fishmonger)."

Pictures of basketry fish traps used by Ewe fishermen in the Banda area, Ghana, also Togo & Benin. A conical fish trap made from bamboo (pamplo ti) sticks, and pounded vine rope (adzɔ ƒoƒo). A set of traps that are fixed in place with a line to point and a left to catch fish inside. #coastalhistory
A basketry fish trap (exa in Ewe) made and used by Ewe fishermen in the Banda area, Ghana. Traps like these were used for fishing between the months of August and November. They were effective in catching different types of fish three inches in length or longer. Agbegikrom South, December, 1982.

Fishing for seaweed? Drawing of the harvesting of seaweed Hokkaido, Japan in 1904. Most likely depicts the harvesting of Kombu 昆布 (Kelp) from the cold water of Hokkaido and Matsushima Bay. Used in a range of applications from food to health tonics, traditionally in Japan.
