A must-read this Monday AM: This incredible piece by a former colleague about being trans and serving at the CIA. As the right keeps demonizing trans people (melting down over a non-existent issue in the WNBA!), Julia is the model public servant. A travesty that she can no longer serve our country.

Folks picking up free shit on Craigslist just love to lie about having a second person, being strong enough to lift something, and having a big enough vehicle. Every single person who came to get something from me today required help and said they didn‘t. Does this say something about human nature?

It takes a LONG time to get NIH grants. Not only the application process for each submission, which easily takes a year from writing to decision. But also the educational processes and training. Getting the first R01 by 40 years of age is an achievement.

This is a setup for obscuring the impact of the political review of grants, which is fixing to be massive. It also greases the skids for corruption and funneling money away from universities and toward venture capitalists. Please vote this November, friends. It’s bad out here.

This is triumphant, it’s also spot on and exceptionally powerful. The personal is the political. That remains the truth. “You do not need anyone’s approval to lead your life and make the choices that make you happy…. “I go after what I want. Maybe they don’t like that.”

Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.

Seminiferous tubules of the testes play an important role in #sperm production. This study by @marcspehr.bsky.social &co shows that all cell types in the mouse seminiferous epithelium display unique calcium signaling patterns that are under endocrine control. 🧪#AcademicSky plos.io/3TnAWY9
Confocal microscopy images of a single seminiferous tubule section from an AHM-Cre x Ai14D male mouse depict (i) Sertoli cells that express a fluorescent protein (tdTomato; red) as well as all (ii) cell nuclei stained with DRAQ5 (cyan). Individual Sertoli cells support numerous germ cells. At the apical epithelial surface, nuclei become elongated and condensed as germ cells mature.
