thinking now about sycophantic LLMs as a logical extension of positive psychology and the focus on always feeling good. people using LLMs as romantic partners would also tie in with @carriejenkins.net's work on Sad Love. somebody please write this up so I can read it?

Interior with a Violin Case (1918–19) opens onto a Nice balcony through billowing curtains. The open case echoes the blue of sea and sky beyond. Matisse had recently arrived on the Mediterranean and was exploring the dialogue between interior space and light.

Breakups hurt, upend our lives, and change how we relate to each other but have been curiously neglected by philosophers. Our workshop next month aims to look closer at this often messy part of life. Here is the fantastic line up.

Today I have been drawing this owl and it’s possible that the part-finished version will be haunting my nightmares
A finished oil pastel drawing of an owl, on an easel in front of a bookcase. The owl has that kind of judgemental frowny face that owls are good at, and is looking straight at the viewer The same owl drawing in progress, nearly finished, this time on a desk, near a laptop and some scattered oil pastels. The same owl drawing much earlier with many messy oil pastels lying around. This version is missing the eyes, which makes it look extremely creepy and kind of like it’s going to eat your soul.

A desktop with a tray of many-coloured oil pastels next to an oil pastel drawing of a sunny coastal scene with clear blue water and rocky outcrops, and yellowish sand in the foreground. There is also an iPad propped up on a laptop, displaying the reference photo for the scene. Behind the desk is a window with a big tree in full green leaf outside. Over on the left of this tree is the nest of two neighbour crows, although they aren’t visible in the shot.

Iris Murdoch, master of the face that says “I’m waiting for you to stop talking so I can explain why everything you said is wrong”
A pencil sketch of Iris Murdoch, looking intense and frowny, in Carrie’s notebook, alongside some scribble pencil notes about Beauvoir’s novel The Blood of Others.

The notes say: “petite-bourgeois is translated as lower middle-class. The movie (80s) has Sam Neill as Dieter Bergmann, Sheriff Truman as Jean Blomant (= Michael Ontkean), Jodie Foster as Hélène Bertrand.”

This is a pretty wild disclaimer to read at the top of a document called "Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences." In other words, if this would not pass peer-review, why has it been released?
But with occasional exceptions, our conclusions about the overall state of humanistic scholarship, and in particular about the extent of the problems we have identified, are not yet supported by the kind of quantitative evidence that would be expected in a peer-reviewed study of these matters. In this connection we must stress that the examples cited below are meant to illustrate the phenomena we have identified, not to establish their prevalence.

In part for this reason we must urge caution on the part of administrators who might wish to act on the basis of our report.
