For Matisse, the goldfish bowl was a motif of quiet contemplation. In Goldfish and Sculpture (1912), the darting fish sit beside one of his own reclining nudes as movement and stillness beautifully occupy a single frame.

At the Moulin Rouge
In At the Moulin Rouge Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec memorialized Parisian nightlife at the end of the nineteenth century. The painting is noted for its daring composition, dramatic cropping, and flat planes of strident color. A regular patron of the Moulin Rouge, one of the most famous cabarets of the Montmartre district, Toulouse-Lautrec here turned his acute powers of observation on the club’s other habitués. The flaming red-orange hair of the entertainer Jane Avril is the focal point of the central seated group. Preening in the greenish mirror in the background is the dancer La Goulue. The stunted figure of the aristocratic artist appears, as it often did in life, next to his devoted, much taller cousin, Dr. Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran. But it is the frozen, acid-green face of the dancer May Milton that dominates the canvas and haunts the action. The painting comprises two joined parts: a small main canvas and an L-shaped panel to the lower and right edges. The canvas was severed after the artist’s death, perhaps by his dealer (to make the composition less radical and more saleable), and restored sometime before 1914.

French Window at Collioure (1914) frames a black void between two thin strips of color. Painted as war broke out, it was hidden away in his studio, unseen for fifty years. Was it mourning or pure abstraction? Matisse left no answer.

The Piano Lesson (1916) flattens Matisse's own living room into interlocking planes of gray, green, and pink. His son Pierre sits at the piano, but the painting is less a domestic scene than a rigorous exercise in architectural abstraction.

The Conversation (1908–12) shows Matisse and Amélie in a stark blue room. He stands in pajamas, she sits in a rigid pose. The domestic scene is framed as a negotiation, intimacy reduced to confrontation and distance.

In Zulma (1950), Matisse reduces a nude in an interior to a towering coloured silhouette in cut paper—nearly eight feet tall. One of his major figurative cut-outs, it bridged painting and pure paper, and stirred the 1952 Salon de Mai.

Bathers with a Turtle (1908) is among Matisse's strangest works. Three monumental nudes gathered around a tiny turtle on a bare shore. He absorbs Cézanne's bathers but drains away the weight, leaving a suspended, melancholy calm.

Interior with Eggplants (1911) fills the canvas with competing decorative patterns until the eggplants themselves almost vanish. Matisse treated horror vacui—the fear of empty space—not as a problem but as a strategy, testing just how much the eye could hold.

Commissioned by Sergei Shchukin in 1910, Dance (II) scandalized Paris before reaching Moscow. The striking composition uses five nudes and three flat colors, transforming simple forms into raw, rhythmic movement.

The Romanian Blouse (1940) is the fruit of six months' work, one of ten versions Matisse made of the motif. He simplified the embroidered blouse until it became pure pattern—affirmation through decoration, even as war engulfed Europe.
