Abstract
This chapter investigates the veneer of deniability that surrounds the use of internet memes. To that end, I explore the workings of memes as a medium of discursive practice, sketch a selection of language games in which we project a meme into novel contexts, and argue that memetic practice is aptly conceived as a play with our capacity for projection. This leads me to scrutinize the affinity between memes and comedy, which puts in relief the sort of deniability afforded by memetic practice. Such deniability, I suggest, enables us to get away with excuses of the “it’s just a meme” variety, akin to “I’m just kidding” or “I’m just trolling.” The chapter concludes with a case study that illustrates such excuses in action—namely the appropriation of the OK sign as symbol of white supremacy.

Getting to hold this letter from Ada Lovelace was so damn cool — I really need more reasons to do archival work! 🤘🤓
A small piece of paper with a black border around its edges. The handwritten ink is quite difficult to read, but it is clearly signed “I remain [?] faithfully, Augusta, Ada Lovelace”

The date at the top includes “Friday, July 7”

The short note is addressed “Dear Mr Emerson” and seems to say “ I sent you my card a day or two ago for this [??]. I hope you will come. I think there will be some you will like much to meet.”

On today’s episode of “Things that are True for Everyone Who Isn’t Me”:
Book page with the following text:

“…should occasionally remember to tell the young, laboring under the weight of what they imagine to be their teachers' and parents' expectations, that we too are struggling to live up to what the world expects from us and that we don't actually have that much time to impose crushing expectations on our children or students. [START UNDERLINE] The fear of disappointing others is often little more than a self-induced phantasm. [END UNDERLINE]

Social emotions, in any case, are by no means limited to face-to-face interactions. The "social interactions" that precipitate them are not necessarily real. They may well be fictional exchanges that we have [U] imaginatively pieced[\U] together out of the thousands of real encounters that have left variable resi…”

I find the view that philosophy is supposed to just pump out the maximum number of true propositions (and that LLMs can help with this) completely anathema. This is a humanistic field where we engage in collective inquiry together. LLMs destroy the collective trust at the base of that

[three crude smiley faces drawn]

Such words as 'pompous' and 'stately' could be expressed by faces. Doing this, our descriptions would be much more flexible and various than they are as expressed by adjectives. If I say of a piece of Schubert's that it is melancholy, that is like giving it a face (I don't express approval or disapproval). I could instead use gestures or [Rhees] dancing. In fact, if we want to be exact, we do use a gesture or a facial expression.

I need to make clear here that I am in no way trying to argue that this gap between philosophical discourse and the ways people speak in nonphilosophical contexts is fundamentally problematic or unbridgeable; nor am I suggesting that philosophers should abandon the use of specialized discourse. [HIGHLIGHT STARTS] My point is that there are important reasons for us to care about building these bridges on a regular basis as a way of ensuring that in our theorizing we are not illicitly imagining, when we shouldn’t be, that we are making discoveries about real-world phenomena when in fact we have turned an ordinary word into a technical one and therefore have more or less changed the subject. [HIGHLIGHT ENDS]

I have been arguing that the lack of widespread interest among philosophers in attempting to make ourselves intelligible in the wide world is related to what I have claimed as a false choice in our philoso-
