Today I have been drawing this owl and it’s possible that the part-finished version will be haunting my nightmares
A finished oil pastel drawing of an owl, on an easel in front of a bookcase. The owl has that kind of judgemental frowny face that owls are good at, and is looking straight at the viewer The same owl drawing in progress, nearly finished, this time on a desk, near a laptop and some scattered oil pastels. The same owl drawing much earlier with many messy oil pastels lying around. This version is missing the eyes, which makes it look extremely creepy and kind of like it’s going to eat your soul.

A desktop with a tray of many-coloured oil pastels next to an oil pastel drawing of a sunny coastal scene with clear blue water and rocky outcrops, and yellowish sand in the foreground. There is also an iPad propped up on a laptop, displaying the reference photo for the scene. Behind the desk is a window with a big tree in full green leaf outside. Over on the left of this tree is the nest of two neighbour crows, although they aren’t visible in the shot.

Iris Murdoch, master of the face that says “I’m waiting for you to stop talking so I can explain why everything you said is wrong”
A pencil sketch of Iris Murdoch, looking intense and frowny, in Carrie’s notebook, alongside some scribble pencil notes about Beauvoir’s novel The Blood of Others.

The notes say: “petite-bourgeois is translated as lower middle-class. The movie (80s) has Sam Neill as Dieter Bergmann, Sheriff Truman as Jean Blomant (= Michael Ontkean), Jodie Foster as Hélène Bertrand.”

I discovered this lovely Penguin paperback in a second-hand bookstore but sometimes I need to search for things in ways that are slow in this format!

If nothing else, I have the perfect pair of epigraphs.
The opening page of an essay draft. The text reads:

Simone de Beauvoir and Iris Murdoch:
"Old Masters" of the Philosophical Novel

Metaphysics ... is present, as Pascal thought, in the heart's slightest movement.
- Maurice Merleau-Ponty

And I do not just mean that every novelist has his philosophy, in some vague sense of the word philosophy
— Iris Murdoch

1. What I'm up to and why

Art historians study the "old masters"—Titian, Tintoretto, and so on. Fine art painters also study these same figures. And while the interests of these two species of querent overlap, they are not precisely the same. When painters study the old masters, they are not (only) seeking to understand or theorise about what went down on those earlier artists' canvases and on their palettes and in their heads and hearts and lives and times). They are (also) looking to develop their own painterly skills. They hope to continue —albeit perhaps by way of critiquing or querying or subverting a tradition of practice to which those old masters belong. Painters approach the old masters not (just) as scholars approach their subject matter, but as (would-be practitioners of a techne approach their teachers and role models, whether the latter are construed as shining examples or as cautionary tales. Even if many of the questions historians

I think of the “because + noun phrase” construction as a very Millennial thing, but Iris Murdoch did everything about fifty years early.
A page from Murdoch’s 1956 novel The Flight from The Enchanter. Text reads:

… tears, "Poor thing”,
“Yes,” said Jan. “She was beautiful, as such women are. She come from town, but she is peasant woman, not lady, like you. She have long, very long black hair, almost is two metres long her hair, and like tail of a horse. Is not silk, like yours, but so strong, she almost embrace you with her hair. And eyes, very big, on side of face like animal, and going up, so.”
"And she wear always four black petticoats,” said Stefan,
“What happened to her?” asked Rosa.
"Funny thing, she fall down a well,” said Stefan.
"The well in the village?” asked Rosa. "The one where you waited?”
“Yes,” said Stefan. “She not fall by accident. She jump down herself.”
"Why?” asked Rosa.
“Because Hitler,” said Stefan. [editor’s note: Carrie has circled “because Hitler” in pencil]
"Was she Jewish?” asked Rosa.
Stefan shrugged his shoulders. “Perhaps was Jewish, perhaps Socialist, I don't know.”
“I think she was gipsy,” said Jan. “Hitler not like gipsies either, he kill gipsies too, so they say in Poland."
“Was funny thing about that,” said Stefan. "When she fall in the well, she not do it properly, but catch her foot in well rope, and hang upside down half-way in well.”
"What happened?” asked Rosa.
“Someone of our village come past, said Stefan. “Who was it, Jan, who come past?”
"Nikolai the carpenter,” said Jan.
“Nikolai come past,” said Stefan, “and see her there down well. All he see is her black petticoats. And he ask her, "You Want to come up or to go down?" She say "Down.” So he
shake well rope, and she fall into well and drown for good. That was funny, wasn’t it? You want to go up or down!”

“Why does healing so often mean mutilating? What value does personal adjustment have in an unjust society?“ The therapist narrator of Beauvoir’s The Mandarins (1954) reflects on her attempts to help a small boy whose father has been killed at Dachau.
Carrie’s thumb with a navy blue nail holds open a page of a book next to an art deco bookmark. The text reads:

couldn't make up my mind to get down to it. It's true l've always been the kind to ask myself a lot of questions. Why does healing so often mean mutilating? What value does personal adjustment have in an unjust society? But nevertheless, it has always fascinated me to devise solutions for each new case. My objective isn't to give my patients a false feeling of inner peace; if I seek to deliver them from their personal nightmares, it's only to make them better able to face the real problems of life. And each time 1 succeeded, I felt 1 had accomplished something useful. The task is huge, it requires everyone's co-operation.
That's what I thought yesterday. But it's all based on the premise that every intelligent being has a part to play in a history that is steadily leading the world towards happiness. Today 1 no longer believe in that beautiful harmony. The future escapes us; it will shape itself without us. Well then, if we have to be content with the present, what difference does it make whether little Ferdinand once more becomes carefree and happy like other children?
'I shouldn't be thinking such things, 1 told myself. If 1 go on like this, it won't be long before l'll have to close up my office.
I went into the bathroom and brought back a bowl of water and an armor of old newspapers. In the fireplace, balls of paper ng dully; I knelt down, moistened the printed sheets, crumpling them up. This sort of task was less to me than it used to be; with Nadine's help and an al hand from the concierge's wife, 1 kept the apartment good shape. At least while I was crumpling those old
