from a FB friend — how common is it, cross-culturally, to assign names to inanimate objects? e.g. boats, cars, favored houseplants... I'm also curious about cross-linguistic tendencies in this type of naming... anymore know of research? (kinda #linguistics, is there also #anthropology?)

Yesterday, I approached a Moroccan lady for directions and we started chatting, being both foreigners in Germany. She had an armful of flowers she'd just cut in her garden. Out of the blue, she gave me the bouquet with such a warm, generous smile. It made my heart melt and cry a little inside.

Dostoevsky’s "mind map" draft of Brothers Karamazov, 1880. I'm old enough to remember the days before word processing, but hell... Just a reminder that there is no one way to #write or one set of rules that will make you an "Author." Part of the hard work is figuring out what works for you
A photograph of a facsimile of Dostoevsky’s manuscript draft of The Brothers Karamazov, 1880. It is open, showing two pages with scattered handwritten notes often circled or outlined with lines connecting various sections of text together. It also has a diagram of a small turret or steeple

LUFT HANSA. Originally written separately, is composed of the words Luft (air) and Hansa (Old High German for "group"), in reference to the shipping and trading tradition of the HANSEATIC LEAGUE, a league of merchant guilds and market towns in N. and Central Europe. #langsky
The name Luft Hansa was first used in 1924. This advertisement poster, by Otto Arpke, dating from 1930 shows an elegantly dressed women with a hat and a man with a cap reading a newspaper, seemingly in the open air, at an airport with an airplane landing in the background.

Linguists and language nerds, use the #langsky or #linguistics tag to add your language-related posts to the dedicated "section" (= feed), instead o/t general one (where we might not see them)

This is heartbreaking. One of only two major prizes for disability literature is failing after just 3 years. Please repost, like, etc. Someone must have some ideas/support/money. ♿️ 📚💙
I have been the primary administrator of The Barbellion Prize since it was first awarded in 2020. At first I was able to fulfil my duties, but ongoing events (especially regarding my health) mean that I am struggling to maintain the prize and communicate with others to practically support me. There is no solid plan for The Barbellion Prize to function without me administering or co-ordinating it, and it has become too difficult given my ongoing medical issues — and other events. As such, the prize will be put on an indefinite hiatus until we have concrete support from a sponsor or suitable administration that can keep the prize going. The 2023 Barbellion Prize will unfortunately not be able to be fulfilled due to administrative difficulties and my own poor health. We may be able to continue in 2024 under better circumstances. […] If you have any questions then please feel free to send an email to: TheBarbellionprize@mail.com

This is a fractally complex rabbit hole. For a long time, typewriters lacked a “1” key, with the expectation that “I” would serve the purpose. They were the same shape, after all, and all you were coding was display, not semantics.
